From Brooklyn to Howard University

Our students are predominately Latinx/Hispanic, but we have a growing Black population as well. In response to this population, we started a Black Student Union to discuss issues of race, representation, and equity. Our students are driven, social-justice minded, and college bound. In order to expose them to a greater range of higher education institutions, we will be taking a group of students associated with the BSU to Washington D.C. to tour Howard University's campus.

Our school generally takes students on college trips around New York City. This exposure to higher education is great, but my fellow BSU advisors and I strive to open our students' purview and show them a glimpse beyond their own neighborhoods and help them take a step outside of their comfort zones.

The BSU at our school is in its first year. We hope to grow our numbers and forge a relationship between Howard University and our school. Ultimately, we'd like to get to a point where we can take groups of students on an overnight trip that includes touring Washington D.C. as well as Howard University.

We will tour the campus and ask questions about the academics and history of Howard University. Our students will learn about an important institution in Black History and about the possible career paths Howard University has to offer.

We hope this trip will drive our students to continue to strive for academic excellence. We hope that it will inspire them to further the Social Justice work we've done in BSU this far.

Any additional funding over our goal will go towards setting up future trips to Howard University!
