In Loving Memory of Ruth Wanzer

Sunrise July 16, 1938

Sunset April 18, 2016

It is with heavy hearts that we report that Ruth Louise Wanzer, aged 77, passed away during the early morning hours of April 18th, 2016. Her passing ended a seven-month post-stroke battle with hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and rapid physical and cognitive deterioration. Though Ruth became further mired in bouts of dementia as the months wore on, she always knew and recognized daughters Lisa (Lizette) and Veronica (Roni), whether in person or over the phone. She also always recognized Peppermint, Lisa’s Siamese cat! During her bouts of lucidity, she showed flashes of her sardonic wit and quick mind.

Born July 16, 1938 in New Brighton, Pennsylvania, a daughter of the late Mabel Gertrude Pryor Lowery and Paul Quinn Lowery, Ruth was a graduate of the Lincoln School for Nursing, a program for black women. She served as a registered nurse, nursing home administrator, and instructor for over forty years in Suffolk, Manhattan, and Queens Counties. Her hobbies included watching old movies, doing crossword puzzles, and traveling. She was a lifelong lover of classical music, and Veronica and Lisa grew up with the sound of her piano music resonating through the house.  Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, William Samuel Wanzer; three brothers: Paul Quinn Lowery Jr., and twins Donald Carl and David Charles Lowery; and sisters Alice Marie, Margaret, and Jean Frances Lowery. She is survived by  daughters Veronica and Lisa Ellen Wanzer; sisters June Hundley, Nancy Lowery, Joanne Burton, Janet Lowery, and Pauline Hedgeman; and several nephews and nieces,

This Memorial Fund has been organized in order to ease the financial burden of the Wanzer sisters as they navigate the loss of their mother. The funds raised here will go directly to offset the financial burden of final expenses, medical costs, Lisa’s airfare from the west coast, Mom’s final bills, and the many expenditures associated with emptying Mom’s residence. Please consider helping Lisa and Veronica Wanzer. Thank you for all your condolences during this challenging time, and we appreciate your contributions.
