Donation protected
The Project
Welcome to the GoFundMe Page for Run2Raise Awareness / Funding for Baphumelele Children's Home in the Khayelitsha township in Cape Town, South Africa.

Our aim is to raise awareness / funding by running the Rock n Roll Full Marathon in Nashville, Tennessee this upcoming April 2017.

The Story
Justin Garner, an American, met Juliette Collins, a South African, in Colorado in November 2011. They moved to Cape Town, South Africa in 2013, and were married December 2015.

Juliette's mother, Bridget Collins, has been managing & nursing at Baphumelele for 12 years, along with a close friend, Corinne Golding, who is the acting doctor at the children's home. Bridget and Corinne, along with many other dedicated staff members, have seen countless children who would be out on the streets if it weren't for Baphumelele.

Whilst many contributions come in every year for Baphumelele, there are still many needs on a daily basis in which Baphumelele could really use our immediate help.

List of needs
Baphumelele relies on your donations to make the difference in the lives of the children, young people, and patients who are cared for by our various projects. When considering your donation to Baphumelele, it may be helpful to know that items such as toys and stuffed animals are thoughtful donations, but ultimately go unneeded in our facilities. Please consider the items below on our wish list that describe the more essential items that we need on a regular basis.

Electricity Vouchers

Sewing Machines

School Uniforms & Stationary

Home Goods

Groceries

Toiletries

Baby Supplies

General Clothing

Much Much More!

With your help we want to raise as much money as possible to contribute towards this great organization and these list of needs.

About Baphumelele Children's Home

Founded in 2001, Baphumelele Children’s Home  (pronounced: ba-poo-meh-leh-leh)
was a humble woman’s response to an alarming situation. Rosie Mashie had no money when she decided to provide a home and place of safety to children who were orphaned, abandoned, abused, and neglected, but she had a vision, a big heart, a lot of resolve, andthe constant support of her community.

The children’s home now provides these orphans and vulnerable children with a stable, loving, and permanent home. It also serves as a place of safety for children in crisis 24 hours a day. Children are sometimes brought to Baphumelele by police or social services as a temporary place of refuge, others have been in Baphumelele’s care for some years. At any given time there are over 100 children between 0 and 18 years of age, being cared for and accommodated. Because of the wide age range, many families of siblings who otherwise would have to be separated are placed together at Baphumelele.

THE COMMUNITY
Our community in Khayelitsha is afflicted by the largest HIV/Aids epidemic in the world, an increasing number of orphaned/vulnerable children, and an unemployment that stands at a staggering 54.1% or higher.

THE MISSION
The vision of Baphumelele is to provide a temporary shelter for vulnerable/orphaned children and young adults with chronic diseases and HIV/Aids, and to provide skills development for the unemployed, early childhood care, alleviation of poverty, and healthcare information to the community in Khayelitsha and surroundings, so that the lives of everyone we touch can become more productive and accepted individuals who make a difference within society.

CAREGIVERS AND STAFF
We are is blessed with diligent caregivers, support staff members (including cooks, cleaning/laundry and groundskeepers), and full-time social workers. These employees receive compensation for their work, albeit at a very minimal level. Caregivers receive training to handle everyday situations in the home, as well as some health care training, which is vitally important when dealing with so many infants and toddlers. Caregivers work in shifts so the children are supervised at all times.

SEMI-PERMANENT AND TEMPORARY VOLUNTEERS
Baphumelele has been fortunate enough to have a handful of full-time, semi-permanent volunteers join the staff. They have supported the Baphumelele in numerous ways, such as lending accounting expertise to the management of our books, developing organisational systems, coordinating volunteers and visitors, assisting caregivers with trips to clinics and hospitals, and managing various projects. . . . . . . .We are also privileged to work with both individuals and small groups who contribute in various ways on a short-term basis. Temporary volunteers come to us from the local community and from abroad. Some are able to offer a few months of service, whilst others will visit for only a few days.

THE RUN
The run we would like participate in is the Rock 'n' Roll run in Nashville, Tennessee on April 29, 2017. We will be running the full Marathon - 42 kilometers / 26 miles.

Not only is this run 2 hours away from Justin's home town in Memphis, TN, but also raises funds for St. Jude Children's Hospital throughout the United States.

We are also going to register Baphumelele as a charity through the Rock 'n' Roll run in order to raise more money and awareness for the cause!

The GOAL
1. Raise awareness about Baphumelele
 in the USA
2. Raise money for Baphumelele's list of current needs
3. Involve local community (Cape Town) and international community (USA) to raise awareness and funds for a great project.
4. Raise $10,000 for Baphumelele Children's Home!
