Michael is known by family and friends as the guy you just enjoy being around. He is always there for everyone when they need help, advice, or have to borrow a tool. He's just an all around good guy.
In June of this year, after months of waiting for answers and doctors appointments being cancelled due to covid, Michael finally got an answer as to why his health had taken a turn. At age 31, he was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer that had spread to his liver. He was told he was inoperable, incurable, and that he would be on chemo for life. This diagnosis was very bleak and left Michael and his wife Sara with very little hope.
Michael started chemo at his local cancer center right away. However, the couple decided they just couldn't accept the initial prognosis. They took control of the situation by digging deep into research and looking for other options for treatment. This is led them to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) in NYC.
Things started looking up when they met with the surgeons at MSK who were thrilled with the remarkable response Michael has had to chemo so far. Because of this positive response, they offered a surgical option that could be potentially curative!
The option that was offered is very aggressive and involves multiple steps and at least two separate surgeries within a few months, but it is the best option Michael is going to get with his diagnosis. He is currently preparing for surgery which will begin in early October.
Since his diagnosis a lot has changed for Michael and Sara. Michael, who is typically a "workaholic", has had to limit his workload while going through chemo and will not be able to work for months after each surgery. Family, friends, and the community have helped to keep things afloat with other fund raisers, but this journey is just getting started. We're asking for help now as Michael's medical bills are quickly adding up. It's our turn to step up and help the guy who is always there for everyone else.
