Ride for Glaciers

If you've had the opportunity of being in the mountains in the last few years its hard to ignore how quickly the glaciers are retreating. The retreat will not just impact winter sports but will dramatically reduce river flows impacting drinking water, fish habitat, micro-climates, riverine transport and energy production. I've realized broad climate-related initiatives can be overwhelming. But athletes? They inspire - especially kids! So we are raising money to benefit Hot Planet Cool Athletes Canada. While I'm no pro I am going to try to cycle the Haute Route Alps - the hardest amateur cycling event in the world over 7 days, 755km and 20,100m of climbing to earn your donation $. Meanwhile, Diane will hike the infamous Tour du Mont Blanc over 7 days of aching but beautiful cols.
Hot Planet Cool Athletes Canada is a program of Protect Our Winters Canada. POW is global and in France where we'll be cycling/hiking it has a specific focus on glaciers. Everywhere it seeks to Educate & Inspire the Next Generation of Climate Champions. The program utilizes the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework by bringing Olympic Medalists and World Champions into schools to leverage these influencers to inspire and drive climate awareness and action. Realistically, we can't stop the glacial
retreat but it can be slowed, buying time for the changes needed to adapt. Below is the famous Rhone glacier in Switzerland
