In May 2017, the City of Richmond adopted a bylaw allowing mansions of 11,000 square feet on farmland in the Agricultural Land Reserve.
Since the bylaw was passed, Richmond received 73 applications for mansions on Richmond's prime agricultural land. Richmond FarmWatch continued to pressure council and we never let up. We also successfully petitioned the Provincial Government to address house size, and our proposals have been recommended by the Ministry of Agriculture to be addressed in the fall 2018 session of the legislature. Locally, we continued to raise awareness in our community, and mansions on farmland became the number one election issue in the 2018 Richmond municipal election.
We overspent to WIN, and we did! On October 20, Richmond voters elected TWO pro-farmland council candidates to replace two of the councillors who voted in favour of mansions. We now have enough votes in Richmond to address house size immediately and protect the best farmland in Canada from real estate speculation.
Richmond FarmWatch is a grassroots organization and we have been fighting to save farmland. Our efforts have made a difference! All of our hard work and your support has lead us to this critical point. We are at the finish line in Richmond, and after we cross it, we must carry the message to other lower mainland municipalities by sharing our success and encouraging them to do the same. We will continue our work with the Provincial Government to ensure all of BC farmland is protected.
We are sending out this fundraiser to help us recoup some of our costs we have incurred over the last year and a half of this fight. All funds we receive will go directly towards fighting to Save our Soil!
Thank you for your contribution, every dollar makes a difference.
