To celebrate our fifth anniversary, we the students of Taller Bombalele are heading to Puerto Rico to study Bomba and its history.
"De La Bahia a Borinquen...Returning to the Roots, Celebraing 5 years of Resistance"
From August 24th to September 2nd 2019 we will attend a series of intensive workshops on the practice and history of Bomba, and will visit a number of historic Bomba sites and communities.
While some of us are prepared to take this journey, for many of us the cost is prohibitive. We seek donations to increase the number of Taller Bombalele members/students who can make this journey and participate in this grand celebration of our Bomba community by traveling to Puerto Rico to learn from the communities there across the island. We plan to learn from Bomba teachers in the South, West, and East coasts of Puerto Rico. We want to make a strong showing of our beloved Taller Bombalele during our study trip to Puerto Rico.
We will have a few fundraisers and other opportunities for our community to support us on this learning journey. The funds contributed will go to paying artisans and teachers in Puerto Rico who will be teaching us workshops in Song, Dance, Percussion, and the art of making the instruments used in Bomba. We are also raising funds so that we can have the experience documented so that we can offer our Bay Area community members who can't make the trip a report back of what we learned in Puerto Rico.

Who We Are:
Taller Bombalele is a Bomba Community in the Bay Area which was founded in September 2014 by Julia Cepeda, the granddaughter of Puerto Rican Bomba Patriarch Don Rafael Cepeda Atiles, and Denise Solis, founder/director of Las Bomberas de la Bahia. The Taller Bombalele community in the diaspora is committed to the Bomba values and practice that were handed down by the Cepeda family in the San Mateo de Cangrejo/Santurce region of Puerto Rico. Julia Cepeda and Denise Solis offer Bomba percussion, song, and dance classes and host Bombazos, Bomba performed informally in community, throughout the Bay Area.
