UPDATE: IT IS A GO!!!! Ohio State University Surgeon, Dr. Dyce, has confirmed that Uhtred is a excellent candidate for a total hip replacement. He needs to lose some weight before the surgery so our goal is to raise the funds by the middle of September. We cannot do this alone. We need help paying for the surgery. Please, $5, $10, $20, $100, $500... it ALL helps. With the help of the Four Paws Elkhound Rescue we have raised 1/3 of the money needed. Please share this with your friends, family, co-workers - ANYONE who might be interested in helping to be Uhtred's miracle.

UTHRED'S STORY:
We adopted Uhtred when he was 5 months old from the Four Paws Elkhound Rescue last November after our beloved 12 year old Elkhound, Yogi, died of a stroke. His partner, Keji, was so lost without him we could not bear it so we looked into adopting an older dog. Georgeann, the Elkhound Rescue rep said, "the 14 year old is gone... but we have a puppy." We had not even thought of getting a puppy so first we said no, and then a day later we said well, yes we would be interested! That was how we got Uhtred.
Last Thursday, after 3 months of doctoring with a chiropractor, having improvement with his spine but not his hips, we decided to get x-rays. The news was devastating - genetic severe hip dysplasia. His left hip does not even have a socket. Our vet at Animal Medical Center said, "he could not ethically send Uhtred home (after the x-rays) without pain medication" - it is that severe. In an article written by Ron Hines DVM PhD, "When Your Dog Has hip Dysplasia", he lists 6 silent signs your dog is in pain. Uhtred has all but 1.
We have an appointment with a surgeon at the University of Minnesota this Friday. Our local vet and our chiropractor believe that Uhtred is a candidate for a total hip replacement (maybe even 2). Ron Hines writes this about total hip replacements, " It has a high success rate and changes in the dog's mobility are nothing short of miraculous." Uhtred NEEDS a miracle. The "disadvantage" of the total hip replacement is the cost. That is why we are looking for help with funding. We cannot do this alone. We need your help.
If Uhtred is a candidate for a total hip replacement, the University of Minnesota would schedule the surgery within 2 weeks time. The money has to be paid upfront or no surgery. Each hip replacement is $5900. The cost of the surgeon visit is $203. The x-rays were $300. Every 2 weeks, the chiropractor visit is $90. The chiropractor, Dr. Mark LaValle, feels Uhtred will need chiropractic care for the rest of his life, even with the total hip replacement.
Every day that goes by, our hearts break to see Uhtred in such pain. We "play ball" lying down and bouncing the ball of the living room wall so he doesn't have to get up. When he does try to get up from lying down, it is painful to see. He spends the majority of his days, lying down, watching the world go by him.
Uhtred means the world to us. We love him like our children. He is "family" to us. With your help, we can get him the surgery, medical care, pain meds, behavior therapy and other misc help he needs so he can run and play, and grow old with us. We are teaming up this fund raiser with the Four Paws Elkhound Rescue. All monies donated will go to them as we are uncertain at this moment how much Uhtred's surgery(s) will cost. If there is "extra", Four Paws Elkhound Rescue can help other dogs in need. Please open your hearts to help save Uhtred.
