Support Campaign for Rent Control

My name is Samantha Dorman. I am a resident of South Pasadena, a group fitness instructor at Equinox in Pasadena, DTLA and Glendale, and a single mom living with my daughter in an apartment complex on Raymond Hill.
As you know, there is no rent control in South Pasadena. I am reaching out for myself and for my community. Our landlords just issued us a 46% increase in rent that will go into effect in 60 days. A group of us will be homeless. Honestly, in my opinion, this should be illegal.
South Pasadena is 49% Renters, and yet there are no laws in the City to protect us.
What’s happening is unethical and immoral, and yet it’s happening. Our neighboring apartment complex is going the exact same process, with the same property management company. This is happening ALL OVER OUR CITY. And no one is doing a thing about it. Whatever we allow, we agree with. I don't agree with this!
I have a 6 year old daughter enrolled in a dual immersion program at Monterey Hills Elementary School. We have committed her for the next 6 years. I will have to not only pull her from the program, but pull her abruptly mid year. Let me ask you, is this fair? Should our kids have to suffer because of greedy landlords and no laws to protect the renters of south pasadena?
I’m not the only one with children in school. There are a number of families living in our complex and others around the City with young children in South Pasadena schools. Do they deserve to have their lives disrupted?
A large number of residents in my complex don't speak english and dont know how to say NO to what's happening, only expressing tears, anger and frustration. This treatment is UNFAIR and INHUMANE. We need to stand up for the voiceless!
My immediate next door neighbor is on unemployment. She and her 2 children will be homeless in January. They are not the only ones. Is this fair? The answer is NO.
I have legally created a Primarily Formed Ballot Measure Committee, named The Committee of Residents in Support of Rent Control. The money will all be routed into the Committee Fund and used for the following : Attorneys' Fees, Filing Fees, Equipment and Appliances, Professional Services, Advertisement, and to Reimburse my savings, as I kick started this myself with everything I have. This process will take about a year. I am fully committed to this Campaign!
I need the funds to make this happen, my friends. As a community, we are stronger. Please help me fight against greedy landlords who are pushing long term residents and their children out of our city. AND most of these Landlords DO NOT even live IN our City.
My whole heart is in this. I am not going away. I am not going to be quiet. I am not going to stop until we get fair treatment for our renters in South Pasadena! Our community needs your support. STAND WITH ME!
