Hello! My name is Eliana Mora. I am a dual Venezuelan-American citizen currently living in the US, but with my heart always in Venezuela. I am part of the volunteer team at Refugio El Valle, a dog rescue located in Miranda State, just 35 minutes outside the capital city of Caracas.

On June 24, a devastating double earthquake struck La Guaira - Venezuela and surrounding areas. The impact didn't just shatter homes; it left dozens of helpless animals trapped in the rubble, terrified and confused.

At Refugio El Valle, we couldn't look the other way. We rushed to respond to this veterinary crisis, pulling survivors straight out of the ruins. Today, we are stretched beyond our limits: our shelter has hit maximum capacity, and the quake caused severe structural cracks in our retaining walls and dog kennels. The safety of both our rescue dogs and our team is currently compromised.

Before the disaster, 62 dogs were already receiving 100% of their care from us. In the aftermath of the quake, that number rapidly grew:

62 dogs: Our resident shelter population before the earthquake.

15 dogs: Rescued alive directly from the rubble in La Guaira.

7 dogs: Displaced or abandoned after losing their families or makeshift shelters.

➔ Total: 84 lives in our care today.

We cannot stop now. We urgently need to repair the structural damage caused by the earthquake to restore a safe, clean space for our rescues, while expanding our capacity to continue helping animals in extreme vulnerability.

El pasado 24 de junio, la tierra tembló en La Guaira y zonas adyacentes. El devastador doblete sísmico no solo dejó hogares destruidos y familias golpeadas; dejó a docenas de animales atrapados entre los escombros, asustados y desorientados sin entender qué pasaba.

En Refugio El Valle no pudimos dar la espalda. Salimos a responder a la emergencia humana y veterinaria, sacando vidas directamente de la ruina. Hoy, la realidad nos supera: nuestras instalaciones están al límite absoluto de su capacidad y sufrieron severas grietas estructurales en paredes de contención y caniles. La seguridad de nuestros perros y de nuestro equipo está en riesgo.

Antes de la tragedia ya cuidábamos de 62 perros que dependían al 100% de nosotros. Tras el sismo, la emergencia multiplicó la necesidad:

62 perros: Población residente previa al desastre.

15 perros: Rescatados con vida de entre los escombros en La Guaira.

7 perros: Desplazados que perdieron a sus familias o refugios improvisados.

➔ Total: 84 vidas a nuestro cargo hoy.

No podemos detenernos. Necesitamos reconstruir con urgencia las áreas dañadas por el sismo para que sean seguras e higiénicas, y expandir nuestra capacidad para seguir protegiendo a quienes no tienen voz.
