The MANRRS (Minorities in Agriculture and Natural Related Resource Sciences) Redfern Community Garden (RCG), located on the (front-facing) westside of the Redfern Health Center on the campus of Clemson University. This space is designed and curated to be a key site for experiential learning, horticulture + agricultural exposure, and also for the production of organic + fresh produce on campus for all. Founded in 2023 by MANRRS member Zay Barton, a senior Horticulture major at Clemson, who has now graduated. Although being a MANRRS member for a couple of years prior, Zay represents his own Garden Education and Installation brand, Infinite Seeds Academy, in collaboration/sponsorship with Clemson University's chapter of MANRRS.
Since (and before) the founding of The RCG, Zay has either funded for necessary supplies, equipment, and tools out of his own pocket, and/or utilizing impressively creative levels of resourcefulness to get the job done. While this mode of operation is successful and feasible for the time being, our goal is for The RCG to last forever for years and years to come. So, that means we're planning for longevity.
Since graduating, the RCG has been transferred to new management. With, Sebastian Sanchez, a Clemson Junior Horticulture major, as the new Garden Manager.
Our biggest goal right now for The RCG, is automation. Specifically watering automation. At the very least to cover all of our EIGHT raised beds, which demand more frequent watering than our six in-ground planting beds. Currently, if somebody isn't out there (especially in the spring/summer), or it doesn't rain then the garden will start to suffer, fast. With less time watering and pulling long hoses, more time can be spent on other types of maintenance and beautification !
That's just a start. Here's a (working) list of things that the allocated funds would go towards;
- IRRIGATION SYSTEM - hoses, connectors, timer, etc
- Gardening Tools/Equipment - shovels (varying types), hoes, gloves, rakes, non-rusted wheelbarrows, etc
- Storage Equipment - shed, lockbox, locks, buckets, bins, lids, tubs, etc
- Planting Materials - seeds, plants, compost, mulch, fertilizer, plant tags, etc
- Beautification - weather-proof signage, fencing materials, etc
As one can judge from this list, The Redfern Community Garden has so much room for improvement, and it's in need of a plethora of materials. With your help, we can cultivate a community garden that'll last for years to come !
We are grateful for ANYTHING and EVERYTHING donated ! Thank you in advance one million times over, for supporting our journey in GROWING forward !
