This is Red. We met Red when we moved into our house on 17th and Fatherland in 2001. He and his eight siblings had grown up in our house after living in the projects and the 1500 sq. ft. house seemed like a mansion to them. Though he's a little rough around the edges, he has a heart of gold and has always done everything he can to "help a brother out." For over twenty years he worked his tail off as a roofer. Last December he was laid off due to new management at his company. He hasn't been able to find work since. After 8 years of renting a small house on Lillian, he was asked to leave due to the owner wanting to take advantage of the increased property value of the area. He is losing his vision, cannot read due to a severe form of dyslexia, and is on the verge of homelessness. He isn't perfect, he has a record, struggles with addiction issues, and puts some folks off by his language, but we have loved him dearly over the years despite his shortcomings. East Nashville is the only real home he has ever known. He needs help. I am trying to help him find a layer so that he can file for disability, but I know all too well how long that process can take. I know it's a lot to ask, but if anyone could offer our friend Red any assistance this month, please contact me via this site. If you have any yard work, handyman work, etc. I know he'd be happy to do it. It breaks our heart to see him struggle so hard this year, he has always found a way to make ends met and has never asked us for a hand out. While we know there are ways he could better himself, he is who he is and we love him.
