Reilly's Irish Tavern in Granada, Nicaragua has suffered from a catastrophic fire that took out an entire city block. The fire started from an electrical pole out side and quickly spread. Over 15 people's families have lost their source of income.
Several years ago Autumn Haas and Steve Murt went on vacation to Nicaragua and happened to find a bar for sale. They took a leap of faith and bought the bar in Granada, Nicaragua. They both knew that this was not going to be a highly profitable adventure but they both fell in love with the people and the country of Nicaragua so they decided to buy the bar and settle down in Nicaragua.
After just completing a show on House Hunters International several weeks ago, the bar as well as four other businesses burned completely down. Steve got a phone call at 4 in the morning from one of his employees saying at the bar was on fire. As he arrived he noticed that half of the block was on fire and the only fire truck was pulling away. In disbelief he asked the neighbor where the truck was going and they said the truck ran out of water and there are no fire hydrants around. Unbelievably the neighbors from all the other homes had their garden hoses out trying to help put out the fire while the fire truck was getting water. "It was truly a heartwarming scene seeing the neighbors fight a fire for people they didn't know but were still helping out" said Steve.
After 40 minutes finally two more fire trucks showed up from the neighboring city that's 30 miles away to help put out the fire. At this point it was too late for their bar to really be saved as it was completely engulfed in flames. Finally the local fire department truck showed back up. Steve asked what took so long. They said they ran out of gas on the way to get water so they had to try to scrounge up money to buy gas to get back to the fire. "You can't make this shit up!" Steve said. But that's living in a third world country.
They had acquired some more space about 4 months ago and remodeled this room into another bar that also went up in flames. 90% of the businesses and homes do not carry insurance but fortunately their landlord does, but it was very minimal and will not even cover 1/4 of the damage caused by the fire.
Reilly's Irish Tavern is an important part of Granada. There are many families depending on their comeback for their own futures. Events like this affect more than just the owners. Employees, vendors, the building owner, other businesses in the area and all their families rely on income generated from the locals and tourists that frequent their establishment.
Steve and Autumn are deeply a part of their Granada community. In fact, just prior to this tragedy they had made a donation of equipment to the local Granada Sharks baseball team and were planning to sponsor a baseball clinic for local youth.
Steve, Autumn, and the staff of Reilly's have generously contributed to their community. Now those who have been so giving are in need of us to do the same.
