Rebuild Hope for Chris Velush After Devastating Flood
Donation protected
Meet my dad: Christopher Velush, an antique dealer and clock repairman, has been a resident of Southbury since the mid-'90s. Our family grew up in Southbury, and my dad has lived in his house there ever since. He rents out a portion of the house to three tenants, who have now been displaced by the flood.
On August 18th, 2024, my dad’s house in Southbury, Connecticut was devastated by a once-in-a-lifetime flood that sent a deluge of water into his home and surrounding property. The flood waters destroyed the entire first floor, bringing two feet of water into his bedroom and living area and that of his tenants. The flood waters and high winds demolished the exterior of my dad’s workshop, which contained the remainder of his antique and clock restoration business, including tools, antiques, and many treasured family items.
This tragedy comes on the heels of a fire that completely destroyed his antique shop two years ago, and now, without flood insurance, he faces the overwhelming task of gutting the entire downstairs and rebuilding his home from scratch.
In addition to the loss of his workshop, his car was totaled and his kitchen, bathroom, and wash room appliances were ruined.
As many in the area have experienced, there is no flood insurance coverage. After speaking with the Red Cross, they are quite certain there will be no FEMA financial assistance for his town and surrounding areas. Although there are a dozen families with catastrophic damages to their homes and properties, the overall damages do not warrant federal funding.
My dad, known for his positive attitude and friendly demeanor, urgently needs help during this challenging time.
I’m raising funds to help cover the repair costs and support his recovery from these ongoing losses.
Funds will be used towards
- A new used car that he will use for pick ups and deliveries of antiques. His car was totaled and he will only get $3800 from his insurance company
- Paying his current rental truck - currently $40/ a day
- Materials for rebuilding the interior bottom level of the house: sheetrock, flooring, new appliances, etc
- Help with paying his mortgage for several months: he is losing income from his tenants, whom are currently displaced
- Replacing topsoil, seeding the yard, other landscaping costs
- Replacement of decades of his antique business supplies, merchandise, tools, etc.
- Costs of dumpster, other supplies for mucking, gutting and mold remediation
Please consider helping my dad get through this disaster. Any contribution you can make will greatly assist in helping him rebuild. Thank you so much for your kindness and support during this challenging time.
