Please Help Kahlua. She Is Sick.

Hi there,

My name is Rebecca, and my dog’s name is Kahlua. We have been together for a long time and she is the only family I have.

A few years ago Kahlua became very sick, so sick that none of the five different vets I took her to could diagnose her illness. All her fur had fallen out, she had severe panic attacks and showed very bad signs of allergies to anything she ate or was exposed to. She became extremely thin and was very close to death when, finally, an extensive online investigation helped point us in the right direction. After a very long struggle and many months of stress and praying that she would hang in there, her vet was finally able to diagnose the problem as a very severe case of malabsorbtion. Because she was so close to death, the symptoms had never before been seen in live dogs, meaning all dogs with this severity of illness, had already died, thus her symptoms were unidentifiable. Kahlua’s health is now better but she is not, nor will she ever be, back to 100%. Her fur has grown back, her panic attacks have stopped, and her allergies do not manifest themselves any longer.

She is out of danger for the most part, however Kahlua requires very expensive human-grade, base food, and raw, unprocessed protein, soup and potato bread. She also needs two alternative essential oils, high-grade enzymes and probiotics along with her three medications, and regular vet visits and preventative treatment. Altogether, her monthly expenses exceed $600.

Because she cannot absorb or digest fully, her Comfortis flee medication stopped being effective. I had a difficult time finding a flee treatment that would work with her illness, as many of them were contributing to it and causing her to stay sick. It was very hard for me to watch my little dog be attacked by flees and be so sick at the same time. Finally she seems to be in some state of comfort and flee free, but it is very difficult for me to keep up with our bills.

Because of Kahlua’s medical bills, I have been unable to make any payments to my student loans, which are $1000 a month. The interest accruing monthly, is $670, and they are rapidly growing out of my reach. If I could raise $20,000 to apply to my loans, the $400 that I can pay per month, after Kahlua’s costs, will help get the interest amount under control. These loans started at $80,000 when I graduated and are now at $110,000. I hope it is understandable that I have done everything I can to keep my dog alive. I have had someone suggest that I put her to sleep, but she is perfectly able to function and is now out of danger and happy.

I am not a person who avoids my responsibilities; on the contrary I have struggled very much for the last eight years to keep on top of them. I have no supporting family, no husband and no one other than myself to help us; indeed it is just the two of us. I hope you can find it in your hearts to help Kahlua and I stay healthy and responsible .

Thank you for your understanding, support and prayers.

Love,
Rebecca and Kahlua-
