To honor the life of Calvin Bonenberger Sr., we are asking for donations to support Barren Hill Fire Company’s Reaching New Heights Campaign in raising funds to purchase a new ladder truck. As a past President & Fire Chief, and former Whitemarsh Township Fire Marshal, Calvin dedicated his life to serving his community with passion, leadership, and unwavering commitment. Please consider making a donation to ensure that his legacy of service lives on.
A Life of Service
Calvin served the Barren Hill Fire Company and Whitemarsh Township community for more than 50 years. He served as President of BHVFC in the early 1970s and, along with other members, oversaw the construction of the current firehouse. He went on to serve as Fire Chief in the 1980s, where he was known for planning large-scale disaster response trainings using props that he would build himself. Chief Bonenberger became Fire Marshal in Whitemarsh Township in 1987, serving for over 24 years. Later, he became one of the county's first NFPA 921 Certified Fire Investigators. He served actively in the Montgomery County Fire Chiefs Association, serving as Chair of the Radio Committee, and led the coordination and implementation of the 911 service in Montgomery County.
Retiring from public service in 2011, Calvin continued to work in the fire investigation industry in the private sector with NEFCO, where he was recognized and certified as an Expert Court Witness, earning a reputation as a tenacious fire scene investigator.
Chief Bonenberger was a pillar of the community and well respected throughout the fire service, mentoring many young firefighters, fire service leaders, and fire investigators all across Montgomery County and beyond.
A Ladder Truck Legacy
As a newly elected Fire Chief in January 1976, Calvin quickly found himself leading one of the most memorable grassroots efforts in the fire department’s history—the acquisition of its first ladder truck. This initiative wasn’t just about securing equipment; it was about bringing together a team of dedicated firefighters to strengthen their ability to serve their neighbors.
With a tight budget and a big vision, Calvin took a small group of dedicated firefighters, who were also some of his dearest friends, on a trip to Wildwood, NJ where they purchased a used 1941 American LaFrance 85’ tiller truck for just $850. But the true story wasn’t just about the price—it was about what came next. Before Barren Hill acquired a ladder truck, ladder work was not part of the company’s firefighting strategy. Introducing this new tool meant more than just adding apparatus—it required a shift in tactics, training, and mindset. As Fire Chief, Calvin had to sell the vision of how aerial operations could enhance their ability to protect life and property, and he led the charge in making ladder work an essential part of the fire company’s approach to firefighting.
Over the following weeks, Calvin and his crew rolled up their sleeves and got to work on their new truck, installing new lights, rehabbing the engine, and learning the ins and outs of operating the ladder. More importantly, they spent hours driving circles in shopping center parking lots, mastering the art of maneuvering the rear tiller, often with plenty of laughs along the way. It was a quintessential example of neighbors coming together, volunteering their time, and strengthening their community through dedication and teamwork.
Today, the Barren Hill Volunteer Fire Company faces a new challenge—replacing its current ladder truck, a project that comes with a staggering $2,000,000 price tag. In Calvin’s honor, our family invites you to support the Fire Company's Reaching New Heights campaign, a fundraiser dedicated to making this critical purchase possible. Just as Calvin and his fellow firefighters once came together to secure their first ladder truck, we hope the community will rally once again to ensure the safety of future generations. Serving the Barren Hill Fire Company was one of Calvin’s lifelong passions. We have no doubt that he’d be incredibly proud to once again be part of a grassroots campaign to bring people together to support the fire company he loved and the community they serve.
Our family asks you to honor Calvin’s legacy of service by donating to the Reaching New Heights campaign. Please be sure to note that your contribution is “In Memory of Calvin Bonenberger Sr.” 100% of proceeds go directly to the Barren Hill Fire Company and their Reaching New Heights Campaign.
If you're able, please join us as we honor Calvin with Crossed Ladders Ceremony on April 12, 2025, at 10 AM at Barren Hill Fire Company, followed by a Celebration of Life. All are welcome to pay tribute to a life of service and bravery.
Calvin’s love for his family, his fire company, and his community will forever guide us. May we all strive to reach new heights, just as he did.
