Rea : Studio Art - PMA Craft show!

Hello!

My name is Rea and I am an emerging jewelry artist from Philadelphia. My work is designed virtually, using a 3D modeling program called Rhinoceros. Each piece is 3D printed in nylon, a strong, flexible and lightweight material.

I’ve established a formulaic process to the way I generate my work. I begin by creating a single form. Then I multiply and array those pieces along a curve that twists and turns. The pieces entwine and interlace one another, producing a complex network throughout the form.

I was born with a genetic bilateral hearing impairment. My experience with hearing loss inspired this body of work. Since I was three months old, I have worn hearing aids. They amplify and clarify sounds, which are otherwise subdued or unintelligible to me.

Environmental noise, overlapping conversations, and the absence of light to read lips by, affect my auditory perception, making it more challenging for me to comprehend what I hear.

I explored the concepts of sound waves, overlapping noise, missing segments, distortion and repetition. I wanted to visually represent in an abstract way, my perception of language and sounds.

Recently, my work was accepted into the 2015 Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show!

The Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show is presented annually by The Craft Show Committee and Women’s Committee for the benefit of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

The event attracts an estimated 18,000 visitors to the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia from, November 12-15, with a special preview night on the 11th.

This will be my first time exhibiting my work at an event like this. Presentation and inventory will be essential to my success. It will not be a cheap endeavor, my booth fee alone will cost $1000 and that is just the beginning!

I won’t lie, it is overwhelming to think about spending so much money (money, that unfortunately, I don’t have to invest by myself), but people are cheering me on and I am very excited to have this amazing opportunity.

I have spoken with other jewelry artists who have done this show before, and some who are first timers like myself. I am determined to give this my all and I am confident that I can do it successfully.

So with your help, my goal is to raise $4,000. This fund will help pay for my booth rental, electricity, display installation, lighting and inventory.

The booth is expensive, that’s for sure… but it won’t be the most expensive aspect of participating in this show. As an exhibitor I have agreed to bring sufficient inventory to be sold over the course of 4 days to an anticipated 18,000 attendees.

My existing body work consist mostly of large-scale statement pieces. They are bold and stunning, as well as one of a kind and expensive. It is imperative that I have a diverse range of wearable jewelry available.

In anticipation of this event, I am creating a dazzling production line of earrings, bangles, pendants and rings to sell.

Two design examples that will be available, are my popular oval array gauge earrings and my diamond hoops. I will be adapting these designs for regular wear; for people without stretched ear lobes.

These are my cost projections for the show:

$200 --     Electricity.

$1000 –  10’ x 10’ Booth rental.

$1500 –    Booth display, furnishing and lighting;
                       Packaging and promotional material.

$1000 –   Production line of 3-D printed jewelry.

(The last 4 images are snap shots of virtual renderings of in progress work for the show.)

I will be sharing in-progress photographs and news updates on social media as I prepare for this show! I anticipate that this will be a game changing opportunity for me. Reaching my goal will help me jump start my production line, promote my art and further expand my network.

I deeply and sincerely appreciate all the support that I have received from friends and family.

A very special thank you to Sara Gallow, who urged me to apply for this show and for all her helpful advice!

I also want to thank all of my colleagues and artist friends who have given me advice, shared their exhibiting experiences with me and encouraged me as I undertake this endeavor.  I am truly fortunate to know so many amazingly talented and inspiring people.

Most of all, I'd like to thank you, my supporters, without whom I would have to watch this opportunity sail away.
