Raise the Roof for Raven!

I originally started this fundraiser for my student Raven to cover the cost of housing at LIU Brooklyn (original post below.) Yesterday; however, we called to try to appeal to SUNY Potsdam to reconsider Raven for a program from which he was previously denied, and they agreed to reconsider! We will not know the results of that decision for a few days, but in the meantime they have offered Raven a considerably larger financial aid package which leaves only $3500 for Raven to pay out of pocket! Of course, Raven accepted the offer and will be attending SUNY Potsdam in the fall!
$3500 is a much more attainable goal and I know we can do it! Thanks to all who have donated thus far, Raven appreciates it more than words can say. Let's see if we can raise the rest and raise a new roof for Raven at SUNY Potsdam!

My name is Amy Carlson and I am the Associate Director of College Counseling at a private Jewish day school in Westchester County, NY. While some may assume that all of our students are wealthy, that is not always the case. Raven Nanna, unlike many of his peers, has struggled with financial and other personal difficulties for his entire life. His considerable hardships and the adversity he has faced set him apart, but his perseverance and strength of character in overcoming them is what makes him extraordinarily special to me and to so many in our school community.
Raven has done everything right in the college process, but recently it has started to seem like the dream of being the first in his family to attend college might be an impossibility. Although Raven has been accepted to five out of the nine schools to which he applied, not one has been able to offer him all of the funding he will need to attend.
Raven and I went to visit LIU Brooklyn in person, quite ready to beg them for the money Raven needs. We met with several people and made some real progress!! Raven will probably get a lot more funding, but it will cover his tuition only and will still include some loans. The money they are able to give him; however, will not cover room and board. That is why I have created this account, to try to raise $6,500 for his first semester of housing and meals in college. My wish for Raven is that he has the opportunity to see his hard work pay off, to get out of the house and have a real college experience; an experience that is simply expected as a normal course of action for nearly all of his peers, but feels far out of reach for Raven.
Raven is sweet, sincere, artistic, humble, and much much stronger than he realizes. He deserves the chance to experience and embrace all of the beautiful things that the college campus can offer, and he will add immeasurable beauty to the campus lucky enough to receive him, and indeed to the world he will enter as a college graduate.
Every little bit counts. If there is any amount at all you are able to donate within the next 30 days, please do! You will be doing something so important for a young person who wants to contribute to the world in ways that will make it a better, more accepting and more accessible place for everyone.

If we reach this goal (or maybe even beyond this goal!) every person who donates will receive a photo montage of Raven leaving the south side of New Rochelle and moving into his brand new dorm room at LIU Brooklyn. He may even draw you a picture if you're lucky! Every donation collected will get us a little closer to changing the world for one deserving student; a student who I am positive will change the world for many others if only he is given the opportunity.
