The Alabama Build-Vention is a one of a kind event that has an amazing impact on both the people that go, and the community that we work in.
April 27th - May 1st myself and my students at Revolution Martial Fitness will take our work out of the dojo and into the world. We will get together with martial arts school owners and students from around the country, and combine or efforts to help restore and impovrished community.
This will be our 4th year we are participating in this event. Each year we have brought more money and students than the year before. And it is my hope that this year will be no different. It has been amazing to go back each year and see the long term impact our efforts have made in the community. We have done everything from building afforable houses, to building a business that will create jobs and fund other community restoration efforts.
At the bottom of this description there is a letter from Pam Dorr (Head of HERO) about the projects we will be working on this year.
Please, support this amazing cause. This is more than just donating to an organization. It is directly contributing to something that will benefit a community. No amount is too small, and you will get to see exactly where your money went after we are done.
100% of all money raised is donated to HERO and used directly for the projects we will be working on.
If you would like HERO to send you a reciept for your donation please send your Full Name and Address to: [email redacted]
I will give HERO the list when we travel there at the end of April.
Please help us take the values of the martial arts out of the dojo and into the world.
Note from Pam:
Hi Paul!
I am excited to give you an update of the projects for this year.
During the last weekend in April, we will gather at the HERO campus in Greensboro to support change in the Hale County community. There are a number of projects going on this year. The group will arrive on Wed 4/27 and will begin working on Thurs. We will be working on Thurs, Fri and Sat. Everyone will head home on Sunday.
There are 4 main projects:
a) Dialysis at Home - For the past year, Henrietta Winn has been battling kidney failure and will need to undergo dialysis. She lives in a very rural area of Sawyerville, AL and would have to take the bus nearly two hours daily to receive in-center treatment. On top of this, she would need to need to stay at the blood center for four hours each time. She will have to spend 8 hours a day, 3 days on dialysis. This is very taxing on the 82-year-old Miss Winn.
She has been closely monitored by the lovely Nurse Jane Prewitt and luckily, she is a perfect candidate for in-home-treatment. In order to have in-home dialysis, the patient needs a clean, dust free room. Her home is in disrepair. Miss Winn's house is ill fit for dialysis and she cannot bear to move away from the home her and her husband have shared for decades.
That's where we come in! We will build and deliver a small and mobile room where Miss Winn can do dialysis. It will be clean, comfortable, warm and dry. It will be outfitted with spray foam insulation to keep dust from infiltrating. This would mean the world to Miss Winn and make her life so much more comfortable. This room will also be able to serve others within the community after Miss Winn has finished using it.
b) The Martin Stewart Community Center - The group helped HERO frame out the building 3 years ago. HERO has been working to get the financing together to since then and the building is well underway now. Contractors and working to finish the electrical, plumbing, HVAC, lay the flooring and install appliances. We will have 4500 sq feet downstairs including a commercial kitchen that will feed 100, class room for our students earning their GED's and a community room. Upstairs out bunk house will sleep 35. We have been hard at work picking up used appliances, desks, tables and chairs for our new school at auction. We will be finishing off the school with the finishing touches like paint, patio and christening the school!
c) YouthBuild - This year we will work along side our youth students as they build a small cottage for a senior citizen right next to the HERO campus.
d) HERO Lofts - We will be finishing up construction on 3 HERO lofts to create affordable housing in the downtown area.
On all the projects there will be some light construction and plenty of painting to do. All the work we do will bring hope and inspiration to Hale County!
Best!
