One of the key battlegrounds of our day, which offers us perhaps the greatest opportunity to radically change our world for the better, is the need to win the fight for the wellbeing and life chances of the girl child.
According to UNICEF, ‘investing in girls’ education transforms communities, countries and the entire world’ and ‘investing in girls’ secondary education is one of the most transformative development strategies.’
Since its founding in 1961 by the Catholic Mission, Holy Rosary Girls' Secondary School, Umuahia, Nigeria, has been at the forefront of championing the cause of the girl child. Since then, and despite huge resource challenges, the school has produced an amazing array of gifted, talented and high achieving women who are making significant contributions in nation-building and all walks of life.
Up to 1600 students, between the ages of 10 and 16 years of age, attend the school each year. Sadly, the facilities and surrounding infrastructure to support their education are now mostly inadequate or non-existent. One key challenge is the lack of a facility for drama, indoor sports, assembly or other whole school events; activities that are known to help develop confidence, widen skills development and decrease marginalisation of girls.
In order to address this important need, the Holy Rosary School Umuahia Old Girls Association (Horosco OGA) has embarked on a campaign to raise two hundred and fifty million Naira (₦250m – equivalent to $510k or £430k) to provide a multi-purpose hall as a 60th Anniversary Gift, to ensure that current and future generation of girls in the school have access to a high-quality facility that will enhance their educational experience and ultimately transform theirs and the lives of their families and communities.
Please join us to make a difference in the lives of future generation of girls by contributing to this campaign. There is more information on our website www.horosco.org.
