Hospitals around the world are facing a dire shortage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) needed to protect doctors and nurses in the frontline as they deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.
Our healthcare workers are facing a crisis, resorting to bandanas, sports goggles, homemade face masks, and recycling whatever gear they can, putting themselves and others at risk of infection. Several American healthcare workers have already died after contracting the virus due to inadequate protective gear.
If those in the frontline don’t have proper protection, who will take care of sick patients if these doctors and nurses become ill themselves and are taken out of service?
We are already doing our part to contribute to the war against COVID-19 – by sheltering in place, we are slowing the spread and helping to flatten the curve to ensure the healthcare system isn’t overwhelmed. But we can do more to help protect the doctors and nurses who are putting their lives at risk – by filling the current gap in protective gears needed to keep them safe.
This campaign is to raise funds to source the necessary PPE to protect our healthcare workers in the East Bay. I am working to engage local manufacturers that have the ability to modify their existing production capabilities to produce PPEs. Because 3M and other major PPE manufacturers are AT CAPACITY and unable to meet current surging demands, other manufacturers in the U.S. have stepped up and have already begun to modify their manufacturing facilities to make PPEs. By working with these smaller manufacturers that are willing to think outside the box, we can fill the supply gap until larger manufacturers are able to catch up to existing demand.
Your donation will help our local doctors, nurses and other frontline healthcare workers defend themselves and others from the coronavirus.
*Face Shields – one of the most critical pieces of PPE is the face shield, which protects a health care worker’s nose, mouth and eyes from liquid particles in patients' coughs. I am in the process of procuring face shields from a U.S. based manufacturer. These will be delivered to John Muir and Kaiser in Walnut Creek. The goal is to deliver approximately 1,000 face shields at a cost of $3,000. More face shields can be delivered to either/both hospitals, or other East Bay hospitals dependent on donation amount.
*Surgical Face Masks – due to a short supply of n95 masks, local Bay Area manufacturers are working together to modify their existing facilities to produce surgical face masks. They are currently working on design and sourcing the right materials with guidance from hospitals. Once final approval is obtained from the hospitals, donors will receive an update on the final cost and quantities to be delivered to each hospital (currently, John Muir and Kaiser in Walnut Creek).
**Donors will receive a full, detailed accounting of all moneys donated and spent**
Every dollar contributed to this campaign will be spent on purchasing and/or producing PPEs for health care workers. There will be no overhead, profit, commission or any amount paid to the campaign organizer.
Please donate if you can, no amount is too small!
Please share this campaign on your Facebook, Instagram, NextDoor, friends, etc. to help get the word out!
Thank you for your time and support!!
