Hi, my name is Agi and I love the outdoors and spending time in the mountains.
Whether it's trail running, hiking & climbing in summer or snowboarding in winter.
This year I've decided to climb the Matterhorn (in August) which has been a dream of mine for a long time.
At around 4480 meters high, the Matterhorn is one of the most famous and most photographed mountains in the world. But the Swiss landmark is crumbling....
A team of experts from ETH Zurich have discovered that the permafrost in the core of the mountain is thawing as a result of climate change.
Temperatures over the past few decades have risen considerably in the Alps. The mountain range is warming by about 0.3 degree Celsius per decade, which is twice as fast as the global average. And the altitude at which freezing persists year-round has risen sharply. According to the Swiss Meteorological Service, the freezing altitude in the Alps was typically around 11,000 feet during the summer from 1961 to 1990. In 2022 it reached a record high of 17,000 feet.
As the ground warms, ice in the permafrost melts, and the soil thaws. The soil slumps and pulls apart, which increases the frequency of landslides, as well as rock falls.
PROTECT OUR WINTER's mission is to RAISE THE VOICE OF THE OUTDOOR COMMUNITY to PROTECT THE CLIMATE.
By taking up the challenge to climb our iconic Swiss Mountain, I want to raise awareness and collect funds that will go towards Protect our Winters.
If you'd like to support my mission, I would be very grateful for a donation.
Please reach out to me if you have any questions.
