Preserving My Father’s Legacy

My name is Garry Burnside. I am the youngest son of R.L. Burnside, and I am asking for your help to purchase a piece of land in Harmontown, Mississippi — where my father is from — to build a museum dedicated to his life, music, and the many musicians in our family.

Harmontown is where the story truly begins. Long before my father was known around the world, this community shaped the man he became and the music he created. The Hill Country blues didn’t come from studios or stages — it came from places like Harmontown, from family gatherings, hard work, and shared experience.

This museum will honor R.L. Burnside while also recognizing the deep musical tradition of the entire Burnside family. So many musicians in our family helped carry this sound forward, often without recognition. This space will finally tell that full story — the music, the people, and the place it all came from.

Our goal is to raise funds to:

Purchase land in Harmontown, MS

Build a museum and cultural space

Preserve the Burnside family’s musical history

Educate future generations about Hill Country blues and its roots

This project is about more than one person. It’s about preserving a living legacy and keeping it grounded in the place where it was born.

Every donation helps us take one step closer to securing this land and creating a space that honors not just my father, but all of the Burnside musicians who helped shape this music.
