”Cancer may have started the fight, but I will finish it” - gotcancer.org
As some of you are aware, Taylor started complaining of back and left leg pain in the beginning of her basketball season in November. We attributed the cause to sports as she had just finished soccer season and went right into basketball. We tried heat and massage, she went and had an x-ray, which showed no fracture, and she even went to physical therapy. Stretching and heat would temporarily relieve the pain, but it wouldn’t last. She finished basketball season and we figured that rest would be the best to help her heal. Unfortunately, resting wasn’t making it better either; in fact it was getting worse.
An appointment was made with an orthopedic back specialist where she had another x-ray and mom advocated for an MRI. A call back later that day revealed that the radiologist found a mass on Taylor’s pelvis. Extensive testing followed a couple of days later, including another MRI, a CT scan and blood tests. The MRI of her pelvis showed a large tumor, almost the size of a tennis ball, originating in her left iliac crest and protruding laterally into some of the soft tissue.
A biopsy followed and the results concluded that Taylor had Ewing’s Sarcoma. Ewing’s Sarcoma is a cancerous tumor that grows in the bones or the soft tissue around the bones. Although it is a very rare cancer, it is the second most common type of bone cancer in children.
Following the biopsy, an appointment was made with an Upstate Pediatric Oncologist. They explained the process of what is about to come, which brings us to where we are today. She has a PET scan scheduled to determine if the cancer is in any other bones of her body and a bone marrow aspiration. She is also scheduled to have a port placed beneath her skin in her chest where chemo will be administered. She will likely begin chemotherapy treatment next week. The doctor says that it will be a 9-10 month process. We pray that her PET scan and bone marrow aspiration come back clear this week and we can have the Dr’s focus on a localized tumor.
We greatly appreciate all of the love and support we have already received during this difficult time. We know that it is going to be a long road and we are thankful to have each of you to lean on. We also know that you all would like to help in some way, which we very much appreciate! This GoFundMe will not only help Terri and Kenny offset any medical expenses not covered but also help them with out of work expenses, gas, travel, parking, food and more.
In their own words they “are overwhelmed, humbled and absolutely Blessed at the outpouring of love and support”
They say it takes a village…...well we have that and more! And “We Fight Together”
