My name is Philip Arthur Zemke, I am an Educator, Art Therapist, and Spiritual mentor. This September marks the third anniversary since I was diagnosed with stage-four, advanced cancer at the root of my tongue. With the assistance of many wise and good people in the health professions, and the administration of Radiation and Chemotherapy, my cancer is now in remission. Yet the continuing requirements for monitoring my health, and, establishing methods of re-habilitation, has reached a point of financial need that requires my wife and I to ask for your assistance toward my being able to more fully resume my work as a therapist , teacher, and mentor.
I have been an Art Therapist for thirty-five years. I primarily work with children and their families, special needs individuals, grief counseling, and with families and individuals experiencing the challenge of cancer. In the past twenty years I have assisted in establishing nine Art programs for individuals with Special needs in Montana. As a part of that Montana Special Art Program I was one of many receiving the Montana Governor’s Award for Artistic Achievement in 1995. Through the Partners of the Americas Program (U.S. state department), and, Argentinean social support groups, I have trained hundreds of persons in the use of Art with persons with Special Needs in Argentina and Chile, and graduated trainers working with indigenous tribes in Uruguay. For this work I was awarded a Citation of Significant Cultural Contribution by the United Nations in 1996. I have worked as an ordained spiritual leader at the Bozeman Unity Spiritual Center for twenty years, and some years ago, as a Hospice Chaplain at our local hospital as well. My wife and I maintained our clinic, Play of Life Therapies , for 15 years in Bozeman before the cancer diagnosis required that we suspend services.
My wife, Leila, an Occupational Therapist, and I have done our best to financially hold our own for the past three years. Leila took a job two hundred miles from our home, working four ten hour shifts each week, and then driving home to care for me the other three days. We have been supported by friends during the days Leila is not here. Friends and family have also given financial support where possible. We are thankful for all the support we have received and ask you, if you desire, to contribute to our wellbeing and our work.
As my strength is now steadily increasing, I have been working with some individuals weekly. I anticipate returning to full thereuputic service in increments over the nex year. My Doctors have asked that I take it a bit easy for some time yet. To facilitate this endeavor of renewal we request assistance foroffice rent, Art supplies, and insurance costs to keep the clinic operating sufficiently and efficiently. We anticipate a period of one more year of rehabilitation for me, so say the Doctors. Thus we will continue to accrue medical expenses. We are currently facing another round of co-payment expenses. We anticipate a need for $10,000.00 dollars to meet on-going medical expenses, neglected home and auto repairs, and to get Play of Life back to full operation, both locally and internationally. If this work of service which we offer the world is something that you feel a calling to support we say thank you for your warm hearted generosity.
Love to you one and all
