Help Support Baby Owen's Fight

Our newest family member — Owen James — has been in the NICU since birth, now more than 110 days. My brother Justin and sister-in-law Kristina have been by his side every single day, navigating this difficult journey with strength and love.

Owen was born with underdeveloped lungs and an elevated diaphragm, which made breathing on his own a challenge from the very start. Further testing revealed bilateral vocal cord paralysis — limiting his ability to breathe and eventually speak. More recently, doctors discovered that the root of his challenges is Congenital Myasthenia Syndrome (CMS), a rare genetic condition that affects the way signals pass from nerves to muscles. This explains Owen’s breathing difficulties, vocal cord paralysis, and low muscle tone.

The good news is that Owen now has vocal cord paresis (meaning there is some movement) and has begun treatment. Doctors are hopeful, and he has already shown slight improvements. While we still don’t know whether he will need a tracheotomy. Which would mean Owen will need 24/7 care when he is able to come home. With that said, we finally feel there is direction and a plan forward. Every prayer we have is that he can avoid this procedure, but if it becomes necessary, Owen will face it with the same courage he’s shown every day.

Owen even reached a joyful milestone over Labor Day Weekend. The NICU team helped us bring him outside for the very first time. Even though it was brief, seeing the world with his own eyes was a blessing for our little fighter.

The ongoing hospital care, treatments, and potential long-term support Owen needs bring immense medical costs.
