Send Pittsburgh's Our Water Campaign to Nigeria!
The Our Water Campaign coalition has been fighting for safe, affordable, and publicly accountable water in Pittsburgh for 2 years. We kicked off our campaign in 2017 by inviting Nayyirah Shariff, Director of Flint Rising to speak at our Not Another Flint Townhall, where she stood in solidarity with Pittsburgh residents impacted by lead. Nayyirah spoke about her experience organizing Flint residents during the water crisis, and met with our campaign to help us plan our campaign for safe, democratically controlled water.
Now after two years, Pittsburgh United's Our Water Campaign is proud to have been invited by Environmental Rights Action Nigeria and Corporate Accountability International to the National Water Summit on the Human Right to Water in Nigeria to speak about our campaign to stop PWSA from being privatized.
Many international water companies like Veolia are pushing to privatize water all around the world, including Nigeria. Environmental Rights Action Nigeria is "helping to build the capacity of community activists as part of the Our Water; Our Right Campaign which seeks transparency, accountability and democratic control in the management of public water infrastructure."
Organizers at ERA Nigeria invited members of the OWC in Pittsburgh and Flint Rising from Michigan to speak at the Summit in front of activists, stakeholders in Abuja, Nigeria's capital about experiences with French company, Veolia, as well as the coalition's efforts to prevent water privatization from happening again in cities like Pittsburgh.
But to get there, we need you help! Our campaign is planning to send 4 representatives from Pittsburgh to Abuja, Nijeria. We need to raise $5,000 before the end of January. Donate, support, and stand in solidarity with the global movement against the privatization of our most basic need.
