Support for the Tan Family

A close family friend of mine, Peter Tan, husband and father to two children, has suffered a life altering event. Peter is an avid and very experienced skier. On Saturday, February 20, 2016, Peter was skiing in Upstate New York. On one of his early runs of the day, one of his skis came off causing him to lose balance and crash on the slope. He slid on the trail then the momentum took him off the trail into the trees. Ski patrol rushed him down the mountain and he was airlifted by helicopter to Albany Medical Center where he spent the next several hours in surgery to stabilize his spine.

Peter's injuries were severe and life threatening. In addition to the major trauma and shock to his spine, Peter sustained other injuries including a fractured shoulder, broken ribs, a punctured lung, and a bruised heart.  While he is blessed not to have any injuries to his head/brain (and his fighting spirit!), Peter is currently unable to move his legs.

After spending four weeks at Albany Medical Center where he underwent three surgeries to repair the numerous fractures, Peter is now at a rehabilitation hospital and is beginning the long journey of physical and occupational therapies to improve his mobility, enhance his quality of life, boost his confidence and advance him towards hopefully walking again.

As a father and husband myself, I can only begin to imagine the challenges Peter, his wife Anna and his two children Elena (12) and Lucas (10) will encounter going forward.  Not knowing what to do to help, I decided to set up a Go Fund Me profile for Peter and his family.  I have donated using Go Fund Me and have witnessed firsthand how crowd sourced donating can have a significant positive impact on the lives of individuals in similar challenging situations.

My goal is $50,000.  The funds we raise will help the Tans with costs such as medical expenses not covered by insurance, modifications to their home to accommodate Peter’s new physical requirements, and travel to/from the rehabilitation facilities. Peter is very determined to walk again and is open to all alternative treatments.  A portion of these funds will also support this drive and provide access to some of these options.

Peter is a great dad who when not working for DAS/Omnicom, devotes his free time to supporting and raising his family by being active and present in all their activities. I've known Peter for the past 12 years, enjoying many family events, sharing holidays together as an extended family, and enjoying many ski trips together. He's someone that's always full of life and becomes the life of any party.

Please consider joining me in supporting Peter and his family so that together we can help them address the many unforeseen expenses caused by a tragic accident like this.

I thank you for listening to this story, for your consideration, and most importantly for your donation.
