We are the daughters of Peter Abitanto. On Father’s Day our father, Peter went to the hospital complaining about neck pain. After various tests we discovered that he was suffering from Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).
As you can imagine this news has been completely devastating to our mother and to us. We have always seen him as a superhuman. As a former body builder he had always been fit, strong and healthy. To see our father suffering, weak and vulnerable is, in a word, demoralizing.
He has recently finished his first seven days of chemotherapy only to find out he still has 20% of Leukemia cells left in his body and will need a bone marrow transplant soon. Even after undergoing this series of treatments, there is still a chance his cancer may return. Along with our mother, we have been in and out of the hospital every day these past several weeks supporting our dad the same way he supported us - being a devoted husband and family man, taking us to piano classes, prepping us for field days at school, and wiping our tears when we felt defeated.
Many of you have asked how you can help during this difficult time.
We are asking that you help us lighten the financial strain of out of pocket medical expenses that we will be incurring over the next several months. Many of the treatments our dad will need to undergo are extremely costly and not covered by insurance. Those of you who know our father, whether you are a family member, friend, worked with him on a job, rocked out with him in his band or worked out with him in the gym, know him to be a good-natured, gentle and giving person. He treasures you all and we will forever treasure any contribution, big or small. Despite the difficult road ahead, we are confident that, by coming together, we will be able to help our father overcome this challenge like the true superhuman he is.
