Dear Friends and Family,
The Covid-19 pandemic has hit us hard. Our lives have been changed in ways that we could have never imagined. For the past 5 weeks, I have experienced first-hand the devastating consequences of losing a relative because of this virus. Currently, one of my brothers is also sick and battling Covid-19 in my native country of Peru.
As some of you know, I grew up in Iquitos, an island city in the Amazon Rainforest of Peru. My hometown has been devastated by Covid-19 to the point that people are dying in their homes due to the lack of medical attention and lack of resources. The only two hospitals in the city are completely overwhelmed, and doctors are risking their lives serving patients because they lack basic PPE. I am sure you are aware that we are facing similar challenges in some regions of the USA. However, I can assure you that the situation there is ten times worse due to the endemic poverty and corruption.
Due to the remote location, the number of doctors in Iquitos is also limited. In the past two months, so many doctors have been infected that medical students have volunteered to take care of patients and the government has made an effort to send doctors from the capital to help. Some doctors are scared to go because of the lack of basic resources such as PPE. Under these circumstances, I cannot be indifferent to the suffering of my friends and family in Iquitos. That is why I am asking for your help.
I am starting a campaign to raise funds to buy PPE for all the brave doctors in my hometown who put their lives at risk to care for Covid-19 patients on a daily basis. Due to the urgency of the situation, this campaign will only last until May 29. I am collaborating with a trusted group of friends from Peru and in various countries to generate financial support. Some members of our team are doctors and nurses working in Hospital Regional De Iquitos. I assure you that your donation will go directly to purchase PPE for this specific hospital. We have firsthand knowledge that it is in desperate need of assistance. The exchange rate significantly favors United States money, so any amount will make a huge difference when it is converted to the Peruvian currency. We would be grateful for any donation to this worthy cause.
Thank you,
Cathy
