Help Pee Wee On His Big Adventure!

Meet Stanley McCuddles II, affectionately known as “Pee Wee”! This lovable, four-year-old potlicker is a SAGA Humane Society pup currently in foster care (with me) in sunny Belize, and he’s saving up his funds to travel to the States to find his fourth and furever home in Rhode Island next month. But Pee Wee can’t make this on his own --- he needs an escort (me) and your help to raise funds for his travel expenses, so he can join his new s'Mother Marie in Rhode Island.
About Pee Wee:
It's hard to believe Pee Wee has already had 3 homes. He was brought to SAGA as part of a hoarding situation - removed from a home with over 100 neglected animals in it. I fell in love with him as soon as I met him, but Human #2 beat me to the punch & adopted him before I could do the same. Human #2 did a great job training him and caring for him, but became ill and could no longer keep him. Unfortunately, he passed Pee Wee off to Human #3, someone who did not give him the same level of care. Human #3 lives on a very busy street (lots of speeding trucks) on the lagoon side of the island and lost his previous dog to a crocodile by allowing him to wander at will. He did the same with Pee Wee. Pee Wee would travel about a mile up a busy road to beg for food at the Truck Stop. Fortunately, Pee Wee, the owners of Truck Stop are big animal lovers & rescuers, who alerted SAGA Humane Society to his situation. I brought him into SAGA for care, recognized my old friend and opted to foster him while SAGA looked for a furever home for the poor fella. He was a bit underweight, flea infested & had a skin condition from the lack of care he received from Human #3, but his sweet, goofy personality shone through. He immediately took over my bed and bonded with the other dogs on the property.
Pee Wee has a heart of gold and a spirit that lights up the room. His playful antics and goofy personality have turned many heads, and it’s hard not to fall in love with this sweet boy. Despite the challenges he’s faced, Pee Wee is a ridiculously cute lil' fella with an advanced case of the perma-zoomies.
Why I am not keeping Pee Wee
My beloved dog Ginger was attacked and killed by a neighbors' dog in August, and since then, this dog (and another one that lives with her) have attacked my pack twice. Given this, I do not feel Pee Wee is safe in my neighborhood and worry every time I take him out for a walk.
Between the vet bills incurred to try to save Ginger and the legal bills I will accrue to get these two vicious dogs removed from the premises, my budget has and will continue to take a big hit.
If I kept every dog I fostered, I too, would be a dog/cat hoarder. For every dog I find a furever home, I can take in another dog awaiting rescue (once those 2 big dogs are removed from the neighborhood).
A loving friend of mine in Rhode Island has opened her heart and home, ready to welcome Pee Wee into her family. About a year ago, she asked me to keep an eye out for a dog that reminds me of Stubborn Stanley, my beloved beagle who crossed the Rainbow Bridge in 2018. This is the first dog I have come across since then who reminds me of Himself - and when I contacted my friend about Pee Wee she felt it was the perfect time to adopt a dog. However, traveling from Belize through Mexico and then to the U.S. requires funds that neither SAGA or I can cover. We don't feel comfortable asking his future s'Mother to pay the transport bills when there are so many homeless dogs in the U.S., whose adoption does not require transportation costs.
The shelter here is beyond full - we have at least 35 dogs at the shelter, many more in foster homes and other strays we keep an eye on and feed because we don't have any room to take on more pets. It's slow season, so we probably won't have any more room for a while, except for emergencies (life or death situations).
Why So Expensive?
We need to transport Pee Wee to the States via Mexico, which is an expensive, time-consuming process that will involve a ferry, a 10 hour bus ride, a 3-4 day stay at a shelter in the Yukatan (to get him the right immigration papers), 1-2 flights to the U.S. and a rental car. Pee Wee can only fly certain times of the year, due to the high temperatures in Belize. All flights need to be booked separately, as I will be returning to the island via a different route. This makes the flights more pricey. These funds will cover both Pee Wee's and my travel expenses as he cannot travel alone. Any leftover funds will go towards a local animal cause.
Our Goal:
- Here is a rundown on Pee Wee’s travel expenses, including:
- Essential vaccinations and health checks needed for international travel & microchipping
- People (me!) and dog ferry tickets to Belize City, bus tickets to Progreso, Mexico, 3-4 night stay in Mexico (to get additional vet exams/paperwork there) w/temporary boarding costs during transit, cab to Merida airport, flight(s) to Rhode Island, rental car and return flights (3) to Belize
- Travel documentation and fees
- Lots and lots of dog treats

UPDATE 3/1/2025:
Thank you so much for your donations so far. We have raised about $750 so far including GFM & private donations. I've adjusted my target fundraising goal downward (from $3500 USD to $1500 USD) as I will be transporting him from Belize to the U.S. vs. Mexico to the U.S. (the Mexico route is more expensive but faster/easier). I put my fundraising efforts on hold due to a massive fire on the island which displaced 10 families and required fundraising of their own.
With less than two weeks to go, I am hoping we can raise an additional $750- or so to help cover the costs to get Pee Wee to his new home. This would help cover the following expenses outlined below:
Even though Pee Wee has obtained the necessary vaccinations at SAGA, I now need to fly the two of us to Orange Walk and back (additional $440 USD plus taxi fares) due to the recently added CDC requirement that he be seen by a BAHA certified vet - and there is none on the island.
This does not include the veterinary bill that will be incurred by this vet.
I also need to buy him a ticket on Tropic Air to Belize City and back, which will cost us an additional $220 USD (for Pee Wee) as Tropic Air no longer flies dogs for free. (I am looking into Maya Air as well.)
I cannot fly him directly to the closest airport to his new home (TF Green in Providence), as I need to select a CDC-approved entry point with a 3 hour layover (Atlanta, GA) and the only one that I could book goes to Boston. Given this, I will need to rent a car and drive him to RI ($125-150 USD)
