Heart Transplant Fund
For those of you who do not know Paul Schwarz very well, he has always been a pillar of health. He has been teased by family and friends as being a Tai Chi, green tea and granola guy! And the doctors at Duke agreed when they met him.
Paul and his wife Lori have always lived this way! In these last months, however, Paul's zest for life and his physical energy have dwindled. Little did he know that his heart was falling victim to congenital heart disease. He had no idea that his grandfather and his grandfather’s brothers all suffered with this disease and died at young ages. Paul is a lucky man to have made it to Duke's 7th floor where he is in good hands and has been given hope for the future. Paul recently underwent heart surgery at Duke to work on restarting the 80% of his heart that had suffered damage through heart disease. He is still there now beginning to regain his strength. The hope is that the surgery and repairs made, along with the special battery now hooked up to his heart, will be enough to repair his own heart. Time will tell, at which point a decision will be made as to whether or not he will need a heart transplant.
Paul's loving family is at Duke with him providing support, and receiving training for taking care of Pual when they return home to Danville, They have been there since the end of May. The worries regarding Paul's health are overwhelming and certainly the mountain of bills will be an additional burden on the family's shoulders.
Let us all keep Paul in our prayers and also contribute as we are able to help with his medical and other expenses.
