What happened here isn’t just a devastating fire. What was lost wasn’t just a home or replaceable possessions. What was lost was my safe place—the foundation from which I could stand again. The recovery stage for Act 2 of my life.
For the last five years, I have been recovering from monumental losses that marked what could be considered a dramatic close to Act 1 of my life.
In my new home, Act 2’s curtain had risen. Undaunted, I stood tall, downstage, front and center. I had beaten cancer. I had regained and refined my voice. Humor and hope were renewed. Determination reignited. I was engaged.
But Act 2’s script delivered fire’s surprise. “Fire” isn’t a welcome word or event in life—or in the theater. I didn’t create or manifest this fire, just as I didn’t create prior setbacks. But I am responsible for how I react to the unexpected. And responsibility doesn’t wait until you’re ready. Ready or not, I must rise to the role life has cast me in.
Yes, I’m frightened. That’s an honest reaction. I won’t lie. “No bullshit” isn’t just the marketing tagline for my book ACTING: Make It Your Business—it’s a core value of mine. Not communicating what I’m experiencing would be irresponsible, undermining what I must now embolden myself to do:
To stand tall, undaunted, downstage, front and center before you.
To authentically, and with humility, ask for your help and support.
