Mystery Illness.

Everyone who knows Patrick Kinney knows that he is a dedicated social worker, husband and father who loves his church, his sobriety, and his Florida State Seminoles. In 2014, our lives changed dramatically when Patrick began falling, and after a hospitalization for observation and tests, was unable to go back to work. Unfortunately, there was no diagnosis, and over the course of 10 days in December 2014, we visited two very expensive clinics in Atlanta where Patrick made remarkable progress and we gained some answers. In addition to other diagnoses, he tested positive for many viruses including Epstein Barr, and his body was full of biotoxins from toxic mold, as well as having Lyme disease. We charged another huge amount on our credit cards when we spent 11 days in a hotel while professional mold remediators cleaned every corner of our house and our belongings.

Major Setback.
Patrick began daily specialized treatments, some of which were not covered by insurance. He was slowly improving when he had another setback in June - he was hospitalized for 2 ½ weeks for what was eventually diagnosed as another virus. When he was discharged he was much weaker than when he was admitted. We wanted him to be home with us so he could continue to be part of our everyday lives, so it became necessary to hire a full-time nurse to care for him while I work. And when I am not at work, I am at home caring for Patrick. We have wonderful friends who volunteer to take our daughter to and from school and to youth group at church, but she sometimes struggles with adjusting to the drastic changes to our family and lifestyle.

Hopeful Strength and New Need.
Patrick has been homebound since being released from the hospital in July, but through therapies we have done with him (because insurance would not approve), he has gradually become strong enough that we could transport him to doctor appointments and church if we had a wheelchair van. The van will also help us access recommended treatments which require traveling to facilities that specialize in the complicated issues Patrick is facing.

Seeing the Potential.
Recently our daughter celebrated her 12th birthday and we very much wanted her dad to be at the party. We decided to rent a wheelchair van for one day, and it enabled him to attend the party and go to church with us the next day. He was overjoyed to see our daughter celebrating with her friends, and this combined with going to church as a family had an incredible uplifting impact on him and his overall well-being. I saw how considerably saddened he was that we had to return the van, and I decided to find a way to purchase our own wheelchair van. It would allow us as a family mobility, freedom, & the opportunity to regain some ‘normalcy’ once again. And Patrick’s quality of life will be enhanced beyond what we can imagine. I am certain this will increase his overall motivation resulting in improved strength and health as we will be able to do so much more – more treatment, more healing, and even some much-needed fun!

Humble Gratitude.
Our family has helped us in a million important ways but we can’t continue to rely on them. We have accumulated debt from the treatments Patrick has had so far, and our daily expenses for care, therapies, and proper nutrition are high as well. All of this makes the wheelchair van out of our reach. Family and friends across the country have been praying for Patrick and our family…We are not giving up or giving in! Patrick has spent 25 years helping many folks in our community to break free of domestic violence and drug addictions – it is quite humbling for us to ask others for help now. We cannot possibly express our gratitude for your generosity and the impact of this life-changing possibility for Patrick. Thank you!
