Our organization, Palomar de M.E.Ch.A is a group formed in the 1960's to promote education and social justice. While the organization grew out of the Chicano/a movement we are incusionary. If you have an interest in social, economic, gender, educational, and other types of justice, we welcome your participation. Most colleges and universities all around the United States have created locals. This is a nationwide organization dedicated to educating our students and future leaders.
We at Palomar College have struggled for years to acknowledge our graduating Latino/a students. Most colleges and universities celebrate the completion of a hard earned degree and have for decades. At Palomar we are 9 years new. It has been a struggle because of our local demographics to hold the event at all. These past years have seen growing support for the event.
We have a challenge this year. We were expecting to see institutional funds however, due to a few snafus we were denied. We will reapply next year with a new improved plan.
So that we do not disappoint our students by cancelling, we are hopeful we can raise the money here. We will not give up!
The money will be used for a dinner with family members who were instrumental in the success of their student. We have entertainment fees such as Ballet Folklorico, Aztec dancers, and dancing to DJ music. These are cultural components to any Latino celebration. We also present our graduates with certificates of achievment and a gift of a serape mantle to wear at the main college commencement.
We are asking for a quick campaign as the denial of funds hit us by surprise! Our event is May 6th and many deserving Latino/a students will be eternally grateful for this lifetime memory. We will run the campaign until May 15th in hopes we may pay the bills incurred for a very special cause. EMPOWERMENT THROUGH EDUCATION!!
Please consider as this is something students work for-not only graduation -but the celebration as well.
Si se puede!!
