Cuando Paloma llegó a Boston el 3 de  Mayo de 2021 pensamos que era el final feliz de un camino largo. Hoy Paloma está en el Boston Children’s Hospital atravesando una situación imprevista que casi apaga su vida.

Paloma tiene 3 años y ama jugar entre charcos. Es una exploradora amante de los animales que anuncia su llegada a cualquier sitio siempre diciendo ¨Aquí estoy!¨ mientras saluda a la gente. 

Esta chiquita nació con una enfermedad llamada Síndrome de Hirschsprung, por lo cual ha pasado más de la mitad de su vida internada en un hospital. Hace tres semanas, Paloma tuvo la segunda de dos cirugías necesarias para tratar su enfermedad y desde entonces ha tenido muchas complicaciones. Salió de la cirugía con sus signos vitales muy débiles y con unos morados en su espalda. 

Unos días después tuvieron que pasarla a cuidados intensivos, intubarla y hacer una cirugía de emergencia. Le dijeron a sus papás que se despidieran de ella, pues no iba a poder sobrevivir. Los médicos finalmente descubrieron que Paloma tenía una extraña bacteria en la piel y tuvieron que volverla a operar de emergencia para controlar su esparcimiento y que no le llegara a sus órganos vitales. 

Aunque celebramos que Paloma está aquí hoy con nosotros y  su fuerza y ganas de vivir, no sabemos cuántos procedimientos le hacen falta ni cuánto tiempo tendrá que estar en cuidados intensivos o en el hospital. Lo que se suponía que iba a ser una sola cirugía y siete días en el hospital ya va en siete operaciones, dos transfusiones de sangre y más de 15 días en la UCI. La bacteria le generó heridas en el 40% de su torso. 

Este imprevisto le ha sumado un dolor enorme a la familia y en especial a sus papás. Ellos,  aparte de estar sufriendo el desgaste emocional de tener a su hija en cuidados intensivos, están preocupados por los costos que se vienen,  aparte de lo que ya han tenido que asumir financieramente estos últimos 3 años en donde sus trabajos e ingresos se han visto muy afectados. 

Yo soy la hermana de Laura y monté esta es una campaña para brindarle apoyo financiero  a Laura y Juan Pablo y poder entre todos ayudar a traer algo de alivio a esta linda familia que hoy nos necesita para que ellos puedan enfocarse en estar emocionalmente fuertes y  cuidar a Paloma en este proceso de recuperación que será largo y difícil.  Los fondos se los pasaré directamente a Laura y  a Juan Pablo a su cuenta de banco  cuando acabe la campaña- Aquí estás Paloma. When Paloma arrived at Boston’s Childrens Hospital on May 3rd for surgery we thought it was the final step in a rocky road towards a healthy childhood. Today she’s facing complications that nearly ended her life. 


Paloma Zuluaga Gonzalez is three years old. She was born with Hirschsprung's syndrome and has spent half of her life in hospitals. When not in hospitals, her favorite place to be is probably a puddle. Paloma is an explorative animal-lover who announces her arrival wherever she goes, calling out, “here I am!”


Three weeks ago Paloma received the second of two surgeries to treat her condition and since then has had many complications. She came out of surgery with her vital signs weak and a few bruises on her back. 


A few days later she had to be moved to the intensive care unit, intubated, and eventually rushed into an emergency surgery. That night, a nurse told her parents it was time to say goodbye. But Paloma wasn’t done fighting. 


Her doctors managed to stabilize her enough for another surgery and discovered that she had a bacterial infection. To contain the bacteria they had to remove the infected skin, to be sure it wouldn’t continue to spread or reach her vital organs. The bacteria affected 40% of the skin in her torso. 


We celebrate that Paloma is here with us and her strength and will to live, but there is much uncertainty ahead. We don’t know how many more procedures she will require, or how much longer she’ll have to stay in the ICU or the hospital. What was supposed to be one surgery and a week-long day stay is going on 7 operations, 2 blood transfusions, and 15 days in the ICU - and counting. 


This has, of course, been painful and traumatic for Paloma’s family, especially her parents. Aside from the emotional toll, they’re stressed about the costs that are piling up, on top of everything they’ve had to pay in the last three years. Years in which their work lives have also been interrupted by medical emergencies. 


I am Laura´s sister and I organized this campaign is to provide financial assistance to Laura and Juan Pablo to help them in this difficult time so they can focus on being strong for Paloma in this long and hard recovery ahead. I will transfer the funds to their bank account once the fundraiser ends.
