My name is Frank and I'm a U.S. Marine. I have served 2 tours in Iraq (Ramadi and Fallujah) and have come back with some wounds; some visible but the worst ones are not. I have PTSD - Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I have struggled the past couple of years with coping because I don't have an outlet. I don't drink, I don't smoke, and I don't take any type or drugs or medications. I don't have many friends and I don't like to be around lots of people!! But recently, I've found an outlet. To whoever is reading this, I have learned about this funding process and how it works and I would like to start one NOT FOR ME but for the Foundation that helped me find my outlet!!
A couple of weeks ago I started training with what has now become my best friend, her name is GIDGET. She is an English Lab and is the perfect fit for me! I was looking for something to help my PTSD and I was directed to the D.A.W.G Foundation, (Dogs Assisting Wounded GI's). These amazing people started a foundation to perfectly pair a Service Dog to a Veteran in need. They are familiar with the struggles Veterans face because their son is also a Marine who has similar struggles. I trained with Gidget for a couple of weeks after she had been with the Foundation for almost 2 years; she was waiting for the perfect Veteran to need her, and I was that Veteran!
This Foundation is more than just people giving companion dogs away; they spend 15-20k training and boarding these special dogs. I've learned this process can be stressful because not all dogs can be service dogs; finding the perfect dog who can be trained and tailored to ones needs takes commitment, love, money, and time! Gidget is an amazing addition to my family and I want to try and do this for another Veteran who needs the same. As you can see, it becomes very expensive to train the animals the right way, so here is my request:
I want to try and raise 15-20k for the D.A.W.G Foundation. I feel this is the ONLY way that I can repay them for what they have given me. These funds will be used to find and train another service animal for another Veteran in need! Finding Gidget has changed my mindset, my emotional disconnect and my life for the better. Please help me, help the D.A.W.G. Foundation change another Veterans life!
