Pages from Pam

Update: March 2018- 13 new books were presented to every 2nd grader at each school to take home and begin their own home libraries. Their bags included great chapter book titles such as Junie B. Jones, Flat Stanley, and the Magic Tree House. Many of the book titles were selected this year to coordinate with the AR Reading Incentive Program.  Each bag also included several early readers and a nice hardcover book! The children (as well as their teachers!) were so excited and appreciative! Summer purchasing has already begun to have a great selection of books for the 2018-2019 class. Thank you for supporting this project and please remember to share the campaign on social media!

Update
: March 2017-  With your generous donations the initial book goal was met and then doubled! Presentations were made at all four elementary schools in March. The funds were used to purchase new books and book bags. This account will remain open to collect funds for next year’s 2nd grade classes. I have already started buying books as I get contributions. Even though the money posted to this account has been spent, the donations will remain listed. Thank you so much for your support. I hope you will consider helping again!

Original Story: September 2016
As a tribute to honor the memory of Pam Reaves Peters, every 2nd grader in the Talladega City School system will receive free books in May!

My name is Hayden and I am a junior at Auburn High School. Pam is my aunt and I am proud to organize this book drive in her honor. In some small way I hope that by helping the 2nd graders that her legacy lives on...Pages from Pam.

Pam is the inspiration for this book campaign. Her entire life was devoted to teaching. The majority of her career was spent teaching 2nd grade at Graham Elementary School in Talladega. She loved reading and had a passion for collecting books for "her children". Her students could feel her enthusiasm for reading and knew that she wanted them to be successful readers, too. She was well loved and now very missed. Pam passed away from cancer at age 55.

The goal of Pages from Pam is to collect and purchase 1000 age-appropriate books to present at least five books to every 2nd grade student in the town of Talladega, Alabama to keep and begin their own libraries at home.

There are four elementary schools in the Talladega City School system. Approximately 80% of the students receive free/reduced lunches and many emerge from low socio-economic households. For many of these students, these will be the first books ever in their homes. Having books in the home greatly increases the opportunity for literacy. To boost a child's academic performance there is a simple answer: Build up their home libraries. Research shows home library size has a very substantial effect on educational attainment, even adjusting for parents’ education, occupational status and other family background characteristics.

I will collect as many donated books as I can, but I am also determined to purchase brand new books for the students. There is such joy in opening a crisp, new book; a book without worn or wrinkled pages.

Please help me by sharing this book drive campaign and donating in Pam’s memory!
