49 the documentary film is about a dance that started in the early hours of June 12, 2016, destined to never end by the forces of fate, love and human kindness.
49 is a documentary film being made for the people of the world by the artists of Orlando, with a little help from guest artists from around the globe.
The film, 49 chronicles efforts to heal a city and a nation following the Pulse Nightclub tragedy in Orlando, Florida on June 12, 2016.
It will focus on those who died at the nightclub, those who survived, and those who were left to deal with its aftermath. It will examine how tragedy and obstacles are necessary forces of change and the seeds of a more united mankind. Through interviews with survivors, first responders, family members and witnesses, the film will explore the complex pathologies that accompany individuals through individual reactions and responses to the events of June 12 and the days and months that have followed.
49 is also an important historical and creative record and reckoning of how the young, the old, the lost and the found can lead us out of a very dark place by creating music, sweeping paint onto a wall and leaping through the air.
The Public Art Academy and 49/53 and Beyond Mural Project The Public Art Academy’s 49/53 & Beyond Mural Project, led by renowned muralist, Michael Pilato is a multi-media and art project created as a response to the Pulse nightclub tragedy. Through their efforts, the 49 lives taken and the 53 who survived will be honored by hundreds of artists, architects, musicians, photographers and members of the Orlando community in a symbiotic and reflexive coming together.
The creation of the 49 documentary has been sanctioned by the board of The Public Art Academy and the 49/53 and Beyond Mural Project. This close engagement will result in rare insights into the lives of survivors, victims’ families, first responders and the subsequent emotional fallout that continues to make for an uncertain future among many of the individuals who have graciously and bravely granted us access to their stories.
Ownership of the documentary 49 and all proceeds related to it will be transferred to the non-for profit Public Art Academy upon completion and will be used for the 49/53 and Beyond Mural Project project honoring and benefiting victims and survivors of the tragedy.
Beyond being paid for their work, the film makers, artists, musicians, and many others who have dedicated themselves to this project have no intention of profiting personally from this film.
In cooperation with the 49/53 and Beyond Mural Project, the making of this film is led by seasoned filmmakers Eric Fleming, Beth Hubbard, Kelly and Eric Porterfield, David Lee, and Elliott Schwartz. The film will also employ the talents of high school and college students from throughout the United States, thereby advancing the legacy of the project through their first-hand experiences. Their involvement is critical to sharing with the audience and their peers how tragedies can be transcended and transformed to affect the future sensibilities of a generation. Their role in the documentary can be a powerful anecdote amidst the irony of tragedy being the seed of unity.
The $250,000 goal is the initial funding of this project. The total cost of the documentary is estimated to be $764,000. We sincerely appreciate all donations, large and small.
