PMSC Fish Recompression Chamber

Story

Since 2004, the Timothy M. Pennington IV Marine Science Center (PMSC) at Camp Emerald Bay on Catalina Island has given visitors a greater appreciation of marine biodiversity and ocean preservation. Since our inception, we have displayed a wide variety of marine life in our aquarium by assembling fish, invertebrates and algae from around the island. Amongst the organisms that we have found to be the most challenging to collect are the fish that live deeper in the water column. These animals struggle to adjust to the decreased pressure they encounter as they ascend from the depths. At this time, we are deep into the development of a fish recompression chamber that would virtually eliminate this problem. We have gathered enough money for all of the components of the recompression chamber with the exception of the pump, pressure relief valve, various PVC pieces, and additional chamber housings. Upon completion of the chamber, the PMSC will be able to display an even greater variety of marine life and become one of the few (perhaps the only?) small aquariums in the world to utilize this recompression technology. The chamber would establish the PMSC as a leader in deep (60-330 ft) specimen accession in the Channel Islands and provide an invaluable experience for our interns, students and visitors alike. We are incredibly thankful for any donations received, as this is a project that we feel passionately about. The recompression chamber is a key component in advancing the goals of the Pennington Marine Science Center. If you are interested in seeing the most expensive components that we would be using the funds for, they can be found below.
