PDSA goes to Nicaragua

Dear Friends, Family, Dentists, and Supporters,
Over the years our organization has grown tremendously. This has been possible due to the opportunities offered to us and all the individuals who believe in our group. We have been given an opportunity to open eyes, an opportunity to soften hearts, and an opportunity to change lives. The Pre-Dental Student Association at UCF is ready to take on a mission trip to Nicaragua!
PDSA will be going to Nicaragua in January 2016 to serve the Nicaraguan community with their dental needs. Nicaragua is one of the poorest nations in Central America and has struggled in recent decades to provide adequate health care. Due to political turmoil and natural disasters, they need our immediate attention. The majority of the population lives with very little, if any, daily necessities, such as clean water, proper housing, and basic hygiene supplies. Some patients are unable to physically travel to makeshift clinics because they are excessively impaired by their medical conditions. Nicaraguans do not have any kind of health insurance; the out-of-pocket health care delivery model poses a significant barrier to medical care by stratifying accessibility according to socioeconomic status. Collectively, these factors make it inconvenient and financially difficult for patients to seek medical and dental attention, and individuals with treatable disorders unnecessarily suffer. Three of our members have been blessed to have gone on trips this past year. Due to costs, some devoted students were unable to join them. They have now arranged for PDSA to host their very own pre-dental mission trip. This year, we are attempting to bring as many volunteers as possible.
During our visit to Nicaragua, pre-dental students will be assisting dental professionals in the process of addressing dental needs to communities that are in extreme need and have zero access to health care of any kind. We also plan to host events at the local orphanages where we will interact and teach the children the importance of oral hygiene and provide them with the basic supplies for adequate oral care.
We are a group of pre-dental students with a love and passion for helping others. Many of us work, go to school, conduct research, volunteer and are leaders of our organization. Our objective is to induce tangible, positive change in Nicaragua by raising enough money to help with the costs of our lodging, registration, supplies, project costs, travel, and donations. ANYTHING HELPS!
