Give the gift of music lessons. Help change the lives of talented and deserving music students in San Diego.

“Kids Into Music” (KIM) awards music lesson scholarships to talented San Diego youths who otherwise could not afford them. This outreach program is administered by the Helen B. Goodlin Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit foundation, in conjunction with Music Teachers’ Association of California, San Diego branch (MTACSD). Matching funds up to $6,600 will be provided by the William E. Schmidt Foundation.

Campaign Goal:   MTACSD would like to raise $6,600 to help as many talented and deserving music students in San Diego as possible. The MTACSD-KIM committee will begin selecting scholarship recipients as soon as the funding goal is reached.  The target date is the end of December 2016. At that time, the program may fully or partially fund students, depending upon need.

A KIM Story:   Marvin Mayorga grew up in South Bay, south of San Diego, living with his parents in a small trailer, during which time his father was unemployed and his family suffered great financial hardships. A born musician, Marvin taught himself to play and compose music by ear by practicing at available keyboards at the Target store while his mother shopped. In 2010, KIM awarded him a year of private piano lessons, where he received structured training in classical music.
Marvin has since graduated from UC San Diego with a BA in Political Science, and he is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Public Administration at National University, while working as a student intern at the office of San Diego County Supervisor Greg Cox. Today, he dedicates many hours in leading a student-run organization, Musicians for Community Service, encouraging student musicians to share their time and talents at a local nursing home and the Veterans Hospital in La Jolla.

Please help students like Marvin, who have talent and passion for music, but could not afford music lessons on their own.

To apply for KIM scholarship:   The student must be a San Diego county resident age 18 or under, and may play any instrument. Detailed guidelines and application form will be available soon at MTACSD website: http://sandiegomtac.com/  Please check back soon!
