After a roller-coaster ride of childhood, including poverty, foster care, moving over 20 times in 12 years, never meeting my biological father,
and being raised by my single-parent grandmother, I took my first college class in 1995. This was a task for which my childhood had left me entirely unprepared. I immediately failed out of school. Within 18 months I was in prison. I spent the next two decades struggling to carve out a sustainable American livelihood, first for me, later for my own son.
Please help me to complete this journey that I began over 21 years ago. In just a few days I begin the final class I need complete a Bachelor of Arts in History. Finally finishing my degree will allow me to begin a post-graduate Teacher Certification program, and to finally achieve a dream I've had to become a teacher since I was 18 years old. Finishing my degree will give my family a measure of economic stability unseen, and unattainable for generations.
The money raised by this crowdfunding campaign will go directly to pay for my tuition and books for this final course. By making a small (or not-so-small!) donation you will be directly creating a first-generation college degree recipient, and directly contributing to breaking the cycle of poverty in one American family. This is no small feat!
The cost of this course is being raised entirely by this GoFundMe.com campaign. Your support will help me return to the classroom as a teacher, where I can model to the most vulnerable and marginalized students that they too can achieve their dreams, and overcome the most challenging circumstances a difficult world can hurl at them.
I thank you for reading, thank you for sharing my story amongst your friends & family, and thank you for any other contribution you are able to make.
For more information about me, please see (and share widely) the link to my Medium.com account here, where I have shared several autobiographic essays detailing my personal journey. Thank you again.
