I was a month away from attending art school when I received disappointing news. Brooks Institute was closing its doors, effectively shuttering an institution founded in 1945.

It felt like a stomach punch.

I cancelled my student housing and unpacked boxes. For the first time I didn't want to pick up a camera or think about photography. After some serious contemplation, I recommitted myself to a career in the photographic arts. But how would I move forward without institutional structure?

In time, the failing of a venerable school revealed something valuable. Education (particularly in the arts) is moving in a new direction. One where technology, video and connectivity are powerful tools. In fact, almost everything I've learned about photography is the result of self-assignments and YouTube videos. This educational shift is an exciting opportunity for young artists. As I began to consume more educational content, I felt a desire to share information with others. A creative concept was sparking and motivating me to create something new.

I consulted with my friend Brandon Walker (an Emmy Award winning writer and photographer) to discuss the possibility of producing a series of educational videos. With the resurgent interest in film photography and Lo-Fi cameras like the Fuji Instant, Brandon suggested that I direct a project called "Lo-Fi Photographer."

In early November I began shooting a video that explored the world of analogue cameras in the digital era. As Brandon photographed the gritty LA scene, I asked questions and filmed the process of walking, talking and shooting. The results are raw and intuitive. Video #1 entitled "Holga Street Photography" explores the people and the culture of downtown LA as seen through the lens of a cheap plastic camera. I feel strongly that a true artist makes art regardless of the limitations in place. The use of a "toy" camera in the first video demonstrates an exciting "no excuses" approach to photography.

I ask for your help now as I build a YouTube channel dedicated to a new kind of photography education. My videos will highlight techniques and technology from both the past and the present. As I work with respected photographers in the field, I'm not only getting a first-class education but the privilege of sharing it with others. My "Micro Network" will be akin to PBS (Public Television) in its aim to deliver cultural and education value while serving as a platform for sponsorship and advertising opportunities. Ultimately, the generosity of individuals like yourself will place my goal of becoming an artist/educator within reach.

In appreciation I am offering some exclusive rewards for my founding patrons.

Donate $25 or more and receive a stylish "Lo-Fi" decal suitable for laptops, windshields, ect. Donate $75 or more and receive a limited edition "Lo-Fi" T-shirt as a special gift. Donate $200 or more and receive a "Lo-Fi" hoody sweatshirt with personalized embroidery. This item will be custom made for our "Producers Club" members.

With your support I will create educational videos that will influence and shape a new generation of image makers.

When you are willing to learn, no one can stop you!

Sincerely,
