Hope for Mothers in Sierra Leone

Our goal is simple - we are dedicated to bringing obstetric and gynecologic healthcare to women in the Northern Region of Sierra Leone- women who have had absolutely no care of this kind previously available to them.
Without access to proper obstetric care, women and children die needlessly from wholly preventable causes – destroying and destabilizing families and communities, leaving Sierra Leone with one of the highest Maternal and Infant Mortality Rates in the world.
In any obstetric unit in the US, if there is even a single event that could have resulted in a maternal death, the entire hospital comes together to try to insure that nothing like that could ever happen again. Protocols are revamped, training is intensified, responses are fine tuned. In Sierra Leone, access to proper obstetric care is nonexistent, and these Maternal and infant deaths are, unfortunately, everyday commonplace events.
One World Women's Health has spearheaded the design and construction of a Maternity Ward in Sierra Leone. We have also equipped and supplied it. Our goal now is to raise enough money to provide the Ward with medications and staffing for the first year or two. (approximate cost- $150,000)
Slated to serve approximately 750 women annually, our business model for the Maternity Ward provides for its own sustainablility therefafter.
My challenge here today and everyday is to get ALL OF YOU to care about the plight of these women, their families, and their communities even though these people and their problems can seem so far away and so removed from your everyday lives.
Unfortunately, sometimes it takes something as dramatic as the recent Ebola outbreak to drive home the message that all of our lives are interconnected, no matter how far away we all live from each other. We really do all live in ONE WORLD. Events and conditions affecting people in Sierra Leone can and do have an effect on our lives. Please help us to help these women.
