Our campaign is to enable highly talented teenage Filipino musicians from the Orchestra of Filipino Youth (OFY) Strings Quorum to gain live concert experience in Washington D.C. by holding a concert in the Church of the Epiphany - a major concert venue - on May 28 2016 at 6.30pm.
We need to fund their travel from New York City to Washington D.C., the concert venue, a post-concert gathering and presentation to raise awareness about the OFY's vital role in transforming the lives of young Filipinos from poor rural families through music performance. Over and above that, we aim to raise funds to support the OFY program itself.
The OFY will make its first USA tour in May-June 2016. OFY's Strings Quorum comprising seven young Filipino musicians will perform in New York City and will rehearse with the New York Philharmonic and the American String Quartet.
The OFY was formed by the Ang Misyon organization in late 2012. Inspired by the highly successful El Sistema program in Venezuela, that has transformed the lives of hundreds of thousands of teenagers in 25 years, Ang Misyon's mission is to help eradicate poverty by offering Filipino youth a path to prosperity and a better life through music. Research shows that music training has strong impacts in building mathematical, scientific, analytical and artistic abilites.
Since its inception, in three years, Ang Misyon has reached out and trained hundreds of young Filipinos from poor families in rural towns and villages in Luzon and is expanding to Cebu and Vizayas. The goal is to spread the program in stages nationwide. Ang Misyon is a non-profit organization with support from private voluntary donations in the Philippines and worldwide.
A small dedicate group of volunteers in the Filipino-American community of Washington D.C. metro area has devoted much time to planning and organizing this event. They will host the OFY musicians during their stay. They are working closely with the Philippines Arts Letters and Media Council (PALM) of Washington D.C. PALM is a non-profit non-governmental organization. it is sponsoring this event along with other charitable Filipino American friendship organizations.
