Parvo Treatment for Nico Pau

My name is Ivy Jane, and I am the proud and dedicated new mommy of Nico Pau.

Nico and I found each other through what I can only understand as fate.

For over a year, I have been looking to rescue a dog for companionship and emotional support as I cope with anxiety. Due to complications from a foot injury, I decided to wait until this summer to begin the search.

On June 4th, 2016 I decided to go peruse a dog rescue event in my hometown of Los Angeles - just to put feelers out for when I get off crutches (6 weeks) and see which shelters and resources are available in the LA area. It was 100 degrees and too hot to continue crutching around, my mom, grandmother, and I decided to head home. On our way back to my house, one of my grandmother's caretakers texted my mom asking her if I was still interested in getting a dog and told us that this woman she knew was taking a puppy to the pound that following Monday. She had explained that this woman, not knowing what to do and not able to keep the puppy due to her apartment policy, left Nico on the busy street of Slauson and La brea and hoped that someone would pick him up. The woman came home to the 3 month old pup waiting on her doorstep later that day- Nico had walked 3 miles amidst LA traffic and found her house! I was shocked to hear that such a tiny and young puppy was so resilient, smart, and loyal. I had to meet him.

Upon arriving at this woman's house, she put Nico Pau in my hands (I was sitting in the backseat of the car), he looked at me, sniffed my shoulder, got tangled in my hair, took a seat in my lap and within 2 minutes, fell asleep on my legs. I knew in that moment that this was my dog. We left the woman's  house with a new family member and 6lbs of pure love.

Two days later I got him his first vaccination shots for parvo and distemper. He was praised by PetSmart staff for being super tough and relaxed- he didn't even whimper upon receiving his shots and gave kisses to the vet when they finished.

On Wednesday, something had shifted- Nico woke up in the morning and started vomiting. He became lethargic and slept nearly the whole day without eating or drinking anything, and even though these symptoms are in line with post-vaccination symptoms, I could feel that something wasn't right... I took him to the emergency clinic that night and was shocked to learn that he is parvovirus positive. Parvo is one of the most contagious and deadly dog diseases that is spread through any canine fecal matter. The virus takes about 4-14 days to incubate and is only curable if caught quickly. Due to my paranoid "Jewish mother" gene, I caught it right as the symptoms began and  got him in treatment immediately. Although he is still in the hospital and expected to remain there for the next 3-5 days, he is already showing signs of improvement and his joyful puppy spirit is returning and shining through. Nico is resiliant and a true fighter and I believe wholely that he will overcome this and grace the world once again with his loving, cuddly, and soulful presence.

Nico Pau has given me new purpose and I am going to do everything in my capacity to help him get through this horrible situation.

He is currently in quarantined isolation at an incredible animal hospital, receiving around the clock care and intensive parvo treatments. As he is required to stay quarantined (due to the highly contagious factor of the virus) for approximately 3-5 days, the vet bill is exorbitant and unfortunately way beyond my budget. My family has been gracious enough to help me to the best of their ability, but unfortunately it is not enough to cover the costs of his intensive and time-sensitive treatments.

For me, Nico Pau's life is worth fighting for.  With the bitter financial reality that I am facing as a result of this,  I am asking for your help. Every dollar counts and makes a difference towards saving Nico Pau and ensuring him a long life filled with love and joy. Every cent will go towards Nico's treatment and health care. He calms me down and lights me up and truthfully, my world is better with him in it.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and assist Nico Pau in any way that you can. Prayers, healing energy, and love are welcome. Any and all financial assistance is deeply appreciated.

With love and gratitude,
