Help Nicki Keep Her Home

Donation protected
As of today, my Aunt Nicki, who is undergoing treatment for uterine cancer, is living at home, surrounded with love from her two kitties, Goldie and Silver, and her senior dog Copper. Even though she’s been feeling badly due to treatment, the love and the kindness shown to her by all of you is keeping her going through the toughest moments. Many of you are already aware Nickie has been fighting this battle since her diagnosis three years ago. Because Nicki is on a fixed income (social security) and because of the length and severity of her sickness, Nicki is facing the possibility of losing her home and her animal family members, and she urgently needs your help. I am asking you to give to this campaign so Nicki can get the care that she needs and have peace of mind, knowing her bond with her pets and her home life are secure.

A little more about Nicki: Nicki Curran has lived a life of helping others, whether it be as a teacher, a coach, a therapist, a Meals on Wheels volunteer, a Floral Park Home Tour volunteer, or helping friends and family. Throughout her life, Nicki has always been there time and time again to care for others. I’ll never forget what Nicki did for me, when I was an independent and strong-minded teenager. I ran away from home, was making some poor choices, and was going through a really rough time. This was pre-internet, so Nicki mailed me a letter to tell me how much she was concerned about and cared about me. She also drove from Santa Ana to San Francisco to meet with me, take me out to dinner and check on me to make sure I knew she loved and supported me. The love she showed me during that time has played a big part in who I am today. I know she has touched many of you too.

Since her diagnosis three years ago, a lot has happened and Nicki has been putting up a brave fight. However, she's faced many challenges. She’s had major surgery when first diagnosed and then started chemotherapy a year ago when the cancer came back. Most recently, she's had serious reactions to her new cancer treatment (immunotherapy) and was hospitalized for six days with severe respiratory problems. She’s back at home, but can’t function the way she used to.

Nicki’s life these days is focused on treating her cancer and dealing with the side effects of treatment, which has limited her ability to spend time with friends and family. Her ability to leave her home and even walk in her home is very limited due to cancer medication side effects, as well as long-term back problems and severe knee arthritis. Living alone, it’s frustrating and really tough to be sick. Cooking for herself is difficult because she can’t stand for long periods of time due to pain and weakness. Doing everyday tasks like cleaning the house, doing laundry or even answering the door take a lot of effort and can be really challenging.
