We can lay down for the night and be awoken with everything upside down!
Two weeks ago Nicholas went ice fishing with some friends up north. Nick is 31 years old. About 3:00 pm he and some friends began a fishing trip that has changed his life forever. You see Nick fell into the ice water up to his knees and believing he would be alright decided he could "tuff it out" after all it was only one night! Around 10:00 pm he decided he was too cold and got in the sleeping bag to sleep for the night. Around midnight he awoke with incredible pain and was unable to move his feet. Somehow he awoke his friends and told them to please take him home there was something wrong with his feet. He walked back to the car approximately 1 1/2 miles on his frozen feet. On the 1 1/2 hour drive home the warm car felt painful and when he got out of the car he knew he was not going to be able to walk into his house. So he waited until his co-workers left than fell on his knees and crawled into the house. He took his boots and socks off to find his feet were a powdery white and frozen hard as a stone.
He called his mother at home and she and her husband Paul drove over to find Nick on the kitchen floor looking very scared. They rushed him to Shelby Hospital and they told them to go to Grand Rapids, Spectrum. Nick underwent 3 different surgeries for the next three days finally his kidneys and liver became in danger of failure and his blood had been thinned to an incredible point that they were afraid of bleeding on the brain, all in hopes of getting the blood thin enough to go into his lower legs.
His body began to say "No More" and they had some positive signs for a couple days believing these extreme experimental procedures might save his right leg. Unfortunately, 2 days after they stopped these treatments, so did the pulse to his right leg.
Nick will have a bi-lateral amputation on both legs in the next couple weeks. We are praying that there will be a good 8 inches below the knee to be able to attach a prosthesis.
He has a very long journey ahead with many unknowns! But none of this has caught God by surprise. His mother Anne shared that "He prepared our hearts and has never left our side. We have had the sweetest fellowship, I know we are His beloved. "
Nick will not only have the medicl expenses but will also need to have several home modifications asap - changes need to be made at the entrance of the house, tub and toilet. We will learn what additional modifications will need to be made once we meet with the rehab specialist.
Anne Byl, who is Nick's mom will be using the funds collected to help cover the medical expenses and make sure he has a safe enviroment and has the resources required for the day to day needs.
Thank you for taking a moment to share in our journey. We truly appeciate your financial support!
