We believe in the right to self discovery.
Latinx diaspora youth should be guaranteed a cultural self discovery trip to Latin America and the Caribbean.
In the United States, the Latinx population has nearly tripled over the past 30 years. Today there are more Latinx people born outside of Latin America and the Caribbean than ever before. But, as the diaspora population surges, so does the disconnect between the diaspora and Latinx culture. This disconnect often creates a cultural gap.
A cultural gap is any systematic difference between two cultures which hinders mutual understanding or relations. Although Latinx people share cultural norms, the nuisances are vast due to geographic differences. The experiences of a Latinx child raised in Texas or New York is very different than one raised in Dominican Republic or Mexico. These experiences often cause diaspora people to feel like they have to pick between two worlds and can hinder the mutual understanding of each others culture.
In the United States, the diaspora are considered minorities with all the negative barriers associated with the word. However, in Latin American and the Caribbean the diaspora are considered tourists and outsiders. The confusion of being labeled as an outsider from both worlds can cause a myriad of self esteem issues and aid in imposter syndrome.
How do we bridge the cultural gaps of the Latinx diaspora?
Self-discovery helps us to identify our abilities, but also how we can leverage and develop them. Strengthening a bi-cultural identity through self discovery can help to build self esteem and a sense of belonging to a community.
We believe in the idea of self discovery so much that it should be a right. Young Latinx diaspora should be guaranteed a self discovery trip to learn, immerse and innovate.
We identify, recruit and train Latinx diaspora with exceptional leadership potential. Our cohorts receive mentorship, fellowship opportunities and cultural immersion experiences to Latin America and the Caribbean.
